Feel free to make fun of me if I'm doing something stupid.

Ever since I got my 2021, every time I refuel the gas pump does not turn off soon enough to prevent gas from flowing out the filler hole.

This is tested with different pumps at different gas stations. It'll trigger but at least a cup or two will escape. Spout is fully pushed in. I tried adjust the angle of the pump/spout and same issue.

I know there's an easy resolution... don't fill up the whole way. But surely I'm doing something stupid...

Exactly. Me neither. I'm 31 and have operated enough gas pumps.

Whenever I have issues, I always assume a sloppy hole. But I checked and it was clean.

Since you say it happens at different stations using different pumps the logical assumption would be user error. However, if we set that aside as one would assume you have experience on using a pump the next logical thing to check/inspect the filler neck of the truck.

Agreed. Saw nothing interesting with the filler neck. I was hoping that someone had something similar and saw something on their truck.

I'm leaning towards something with the construction of the fuel shutoff system on a pump and maybe all of a sudden I started doing something idiotic. Like angling the nozzle wrong and blocking those holes on the nozzle that I assume have to do with the shut off.

Could be an issue with the Venturi. Take it to the dealership, it may be broken or disconnected.

What happens if you fill at the slowest speed? I've had this happen a time or two with different vehicles but it's usually on full blast.

Another note is that it happened on the first ever refuel. So I really don't sense something being broken.

Weird theory... if the sensor on the nozzle senses liquid and causes the pump to shut off... could the subtle taco lean have something to do with it? If it leans to the driver side... the liquid would hit the sensor and the pump would have less time to shut off before an overflow. Because the pumps will shut off.

I have an Off Road and used to have an SR5. Perhaps the Bilsteins versus the Hitachis could be it.

Stupidest thing I've ever thought of ^^^

Am I stupid for never thinking of this? I totally forgot there were two notches on the auto-fill latch thing...

I use the auto latch all the time and have never had that issue. Even fueling my bike it'll stop as soon as fuel touches it. Maybe you have kung fu grip

    Yes.

But all jokes aside, there is no such thing as a stupid question. If you are still under warranty take it in, but it sounds like you either have an issue in the neck or in the vent solenoid. Toyota is well renowned for their less than stellar EVAP systems and it appears they continue to take pride in their build quality excellency into their latest generation production vehicles as well.

If you are no longer under warranty then you are going to need to do this on your own, and which leads to my first suggestion, try a different fuel station. Try a Shell or a Chevron and see what happens. Stay close to the nozzle and if it does it again then you will know you have an EVAP issue and will have to take the steps necessary to test the neck first, and if not that, then vent or purge solenoid (though unlikely it is purge, but EVAP systems are weird and finicky as all hell, so anything is possible).

I would fill it up except for 1 gallon and take it to the dealer and have them check it out. If you have to take them to a gas station to show what happens, do it.

I am probably more concerned about this than most because living in Oregon we are not allowed to pump our own gas. New Jersey is like this too, and it would drive me nuts to have to explain this to the attendant every time I had to fill up.:frusty:

I think I'll mention it at the 5k service. Its definitely not something that needs fixed immediately.

Wouldn't mind haven't it written down in their system so if I ever need a new charcoal canister or a paint touch up where the gas hit.

Anything they write in their system stays with the truck for life. In 5-10 years if you sell, the next owner will be able to see the service history. That includes any issues you mention to the dealer that they document. Not a big deal, just something to consider.
