Was it a fairly small dealer in a small town?

Thinking they know it will sell soon to a local (not struggling to make sales) and they have a chance to hook a lifetime of service work, the post sale money maker. Selling it to you would lose that option.......

You can 'order', but nothing is 'built' for you. They'll try to find one close to what you want, add a trinket or bobble if needed to wrap it up, and get it sent to them from where ever they find it.

The days of custom orders are long gone for plebeian vehicles like Tacomas.

Best of luck in the hunt!

I hate to say it, but think of the foot traffic into a dealership an AG Tacoma sitting of the lot in this current market would generate. I don't like the tactic but can understand the out of state dealers motives.

Mass was the one state in New England that actually had 'real' trucks available, but dealing with them out of state is some BS. If you can overlook the Army Green i'd think the LB would be somewhere...

That's because of Oregon. When I was in Washington, lots of folks fled to OR to get cars and avoid WA's incredibly high taxes.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Similar stuff used to happen all the time when I worked for a Harley dealership. The dealers hope for return business like in their service and parts departments and they know it's highly unlikely if they sell a unit outside of their normal areas or out of state.

I'm not saying I like or agree with it mind you just saying it happens more than you might realize.

For vehicles? Folks should be getting dinged when they go to register. Montana is a big haven for this as it is easy to get registered there.

Now for other big purchases, OR is a dream.

Agreed on the registration. I got smacked by California (somewhere near 4K) foe bringing in a vehicle from out of state, truck too. Apparently Cali hates trucks, but you never know where I live. I didn’t go out of state for a better deal, I went out of state so I could actually have an allocation, and pick up the truck when I could, not when the dealer says I need to.

Here, they used to ding folks bringing in vehicles that were already owned long term along with having to do a state patrol inspection. I'm not sure if that still happens, but I know the state patrol inspection is no more. With no other state inspection, there are some interesting shitboxes running the roads around here. It's a double edged dagger, but at least in PA where I grew up, you could trust that lights, brakes, and tires were in pretty good shape.

Of course, we get hosed on annual registration about as bad as you folks do.

Yup like I was telling tonered, I lived in WA when I bought mine but I was moving to Virginia in a couple months. The dealer down in Oregon not only had the truck I wanted, they were also willing to play ball. They printed out the Virginia forms, registered it to my new address, I paid the VA sales tax, all I had to do was move there, show up and pick up my license plates. It worked beautifully. Doubt I could've done that in Washington.

That's wild. Bought mine in Maryland from NJ. I called them and told them if they would agree to my price that I would put the deposit down right away, right there on the phone. They agreed on the price that I offered and I gave them my card info. A couple days later I picked up the truck, they set up all my NJ paperwork and taxes and sent me the plates in the mail. Hell they even picked me up from the train station 45 minutes away.

Keep your powder dry and your money in your pocket. Patience. Wait. This too shall pass, and when it does the car lots will be full of tacos to choose from. This is a temporary supply issue. Supply always rises to meet demand. Wait until it is a buyers market. Do you really want to be reminded every time you ride in your new truck how they bent you over and stuck it to you?

I prefer riding in my Tacoma and remembering how I drove onto their lot, then burned their crops, rode their horses and bred their women. And I did too. Then got 0% interest, and pissed in their shrubbery on the way out.

Now THAT's a buyer's exit survey you can give all 10's on! Patience.

I tried to buy a voodoo blue off road MT in Colorado but they refused to sell to me because I live in a “port state”. Wasn’t exactly sure what that meant. Ended up settling for one in black.

Texas did something similar when I moved back. Since the taxes in WA were greater than TX they waived all registration fees and simply issued me plates. It was awesome!

When I was a kid, everyone would buy from dealers in PA, then, We would register in NY, I’m pretty sure the dealer lied about the price. We had a 84 Nissan 4x4 king cab from Pa forever.

I hate seeing that low inventory is giving the dealers an upper hand .
