Years ago, I waged war on crows for a few years.
This was after I saw a crow take a nestling Robin chick from its nest in my backyard.

I had crow calls, studied them to find their roosts, and would bushwhack them in the evening.
Crows are dang smart though.
If I popped a couple, they'd roost elsewhere and I had to start over.
I dunno, after a while it got to be like work.

If I spot one while groundhog hunting though...game on.

There's a place I hunt on the Cache River (in Illinois) that crows have been roosting for years. It's deafening if you're anywhere near the area. When they leave the roost in the morning it takes a couple of hours for them all to get out of there. No telling how many thousands of them there are.

 

I've never shot foxes, though there have been plenty of opportunities.
Many times I've seen fox kits playing with the vixen nearby.

If a farmer told me that foxes were a problem for his chickens, for example, I would.

 

Wow. Minus the wind, that would be a fun way to spend an afternoon.

I'm thankful we don't have any crows near us, but I do see the most random bird attacks. I'm not sure if the hummingbird chasing the swallows or the dove attacking a magpie takes the cake but they both rate pretty high up on my list.

Oh and I'm pretty sure the swallows on our back porch were attacked while we were gone last weekend or abandoned and eaten. They still had a good week to go but our swallows have all migrated away. I saw a bit of feathers suspiciously scattered while cleaning yesterday

Yeah, there's a big roost right in the city limits of Hagerstown.
Did I say crows are smart?

Every year they try different stuff to discourage the crows...
...windsocks, plastic owls (crows hate owls, which will snatch them at night right off the roost)...
...firecrackers, you name it.
None of that crap works.

I tell Mrs Gritto that the crow should be the state bird of Maryland, they're so fucking tender hearted about them.

Tell you what, if they shot a few now and then, they'd go away.
I ga-ron-tee it.

 

It would have been another bird. The nest was up high towards the ceiling and protected from the elements. They were a very very late nest though so it could have been just time to cut their loses and try again next year.

On the bright side, I can finally get the decks cleaned off again.

 

Problem for calves too.

@Gritto you probably live in town, or where this wouldn't work, but a nice .17 Remmington with a good powerful scope and some hollow point round would get the crows' attention. First one would be turned into a ball of red mist by that little hollow point bullet going >4000 fps. after a few more, they might get the idea it's hazardous to their health to keep hanging around
