This is pure speculation but I’m going to assume it’s because you barely have to press the accelerator to get going. Conversely with the previous tune despite it being at a lower rpm, I would have to give it much more throttle input to get moving, especially in the 1500-3500rpm range.

I noticed this as well. The transition at 3500-3700 used to be violent, it’s now very smooth. I’m a huge fan!

@PapaRee @TWTaco - do you have dyno graphs showing the difference in power between the two tunes? I’m running the premium fuel tune now and I’m curious how the regular fuel tune compares in horsepower. I’m thinking that if relationships in the Middle East continue to worsen it may have a negative affect on fuel prices and I’m wondering how much power I’m going to lose if I reflash.

Props on this tune though, I can’t believe how happy I am with it! I’m trying all versions of the premium fuel tune to see which one I like best.

When we did the dyno runs it was always on Premium tunes. The difference to me on my truck from going from 91 to 87 didn't really feel like it lost much performance.I did notice a drop in mpg by at least 1.5 mpg. I am running 87 tune but i am on 91 for the last 2 tanks and the the power feels smoother and i am seeing better mpg's again.
I would keep up what your doing test out 91 files vs 87 and see what works best for you and your truck. Everyone's driving habits are so different!

Regardless, whatever it is I’m thoroughly amazed by this tune. It literally feels like it has an additional 30hp between 1000-3500rpms. I’m not sure if it actually has a power increase or if it’s a combination of that and the beautifully crafted shift patterns that hold the gears just long enough but it makes an absolute world of a difference in the driveability. I enjoy driving the truck so much more than I ever have before. It feels so much quicker since it’s not constantly trying to up shift and the throttle response is reminiscent of a cable throttle instead of fly-by-wire. The downshifts too, absolute perfection! An ever so slight increase in throttle up a hill and it downshifts one gear to between 2-3k rpms, instead of hesitating until I have to mash the gas and it lurches down two gears and hits 5k rpms like it did before. I could not be happier! Bravo!

Out of curiosity why did you revert back to stock tune before selling, seems like you should pass along a good thing, no?

Don't want to sell/ trade in a tuned taco . It has the regular tip in. I loved it . Im light footed on the pedal so its right for me. Wifey is not comfortable driving it. Dont want dealer to find out . Cant wait for the new 4runner though .

I have a 2021 4Runner. Prepare for mild disappointment. Can’t be tuned. Better than stock 3Rd Gen, but could be perfect if it was tunable.

Thanks so much! Totally transformed how it drives. No longer chugging along, had an hour drive home and I was easily flying back on the freeway. Much better throttle response and feels even throughout the gears. @trdquoc is a super cool dude! Highly recommend. I can’t imagine the truck without the tune now

Yes it does. But IMO the stock kdmax tune still goes to the overdrive gears too soon. I think this would be even more so if you drive thru allot of terrain.

PapaRee tweaked my tune so 5th and 6th gear are programmed to the ECT settings and it is about perfect.

So I don’t have to read 141 pages………I read the first page and I’m not clear on how this works or how much it costs. I have a stock “tuned” truck and I need more out of it. Do I have to get the OV first, then stack this? I’m not sure on how to search for my answers. I would need someone to do it for me, not a computer guy. Thanks

You do not need to have a prerequisite tune to get KDMax. You can go straight to KDMax. Your local tuner can assist you with the whole tuning process.

Can’t believe there is no tuner in Houston. Closest one is 4 hours away, blah. Thanks for the info!

No, All you need is a tuner to apply the KDMax tune and he will update to the latest stock ECU firmware as part of that. Alternatively you can buy the tuning software and cable and buy the KDMax tune pack and apply it your self. I recommend the former.

You think that's bad?... There's only one tuner in all of New England... That's six states!
