I had never tightened them myself or felt the need to flip the brackets (they look maybe 1/4" tighter based on my original install photos). I have had the camper into SP a few times for some changes, so I'm sure they tightented them more upon reinstall.

hmm never thought about flipping them. I wonder if it fits better than way. but I don't recall one side being longer. If they are then it would make sense one side pulls more.

you can spin the lower bracket 180 degrees to widen the bolt gap and allow more tightening

I’ll take a look. Not sure I need mire tightening as it just pulls the x1 side rather than tighten it. I’ll snap some photos later

They have some foam/rubber sealing on the flap itself, which may be new. I also added a tailgate seal, which I extended above the top of the tailgate to fill the gap there. So bit of a combo.

Interesting! Sounds like the 80/20 of the issue is the block. Maybe those of us with the small block can start by contacting SP and asking for the larger one.

This clamp issue is a good discussion and I'm sure SP is getting behind it.

Just another example of a design idea - the clamps from the SoftTopper pull the bar down vertically due to the top portion leveraging against the bottom portion.

I was thinking something more along the lines of this. It needs to pull from the top not the side like the current setup.

So, the camper uses the stock tie down channels?

yes, for all 2nd and 3rd gen. I believe it's different for 1st gen and other truck models.

Agreed. I think if the SP hardware fit tighter and worked better with each other you would get the same vertical clamping effect. As the track block and attached bracket would be nice and tight and sucked together making a stable lower mount. I'm sure that Soft toper clamp fits better in the track as well. I do like that design though.. beefier extrusion for sure.

My Snugtop shell had similar system to clamp it to the bed as shown by econwatch with two types of lock washers. Worked awesome, never loose.

Progress continues on the rear view camera install. Repositioned the 3rd brake light for now. I’ll probably go with a different brake light. Also installed the interior hard Korr lighting. They flicker when first plugging them in even if you have the lights set to off which is kind of annoying.

The back of the 12v socket is pretty deep. I had to bend my connections to get a solid seal but even then i get it here and there. For the camera what me and a few others did was run the wire through the hole for the 3rd brake light then reposition it back into the original spot.

I would def be mindful of your clamps for the camper. Looks like your at wits in on your setup. The 3rd gen is an inch hire so that makes sense. Now that I think of it the setup was designed around the 3rd gen so likely another reason they don't work well on the 2nd gen.

Interesting…. That would make things so much easier. So you just really get all the air out then?

Yeah I use the inflator/deflator to deflate the air mattress as much as possible and make sure the sleeping bags are laid out flat as possible. It usually closes fine with no issues. One less thing to pack in the bed lol!

Anyone run a car top box on top yet? Such as a Yakima or Thule? I have one from when I had a previous car. Debating using it when the trip is more casual but worried about the gas. It’s already a Dog and I’m sure that won’t help.

SP response when I provided them feedback about the clamping mechanism: "We are currently redesigning the canopy mounts. We are not happy with the current design."
