Speaking of twin diesels, this guy put twin Duramax's with twin turbos on each engine for a guy in this boat.

Looks like the cutting insert may be worn, can you rotate it to a new side? Maybe slide it back in the tool holder a little as well, seems to be sticking out which will give you more chatter.

I'll try both of those. Is it making contact too high up on the piece? This is where everything was when I started position wise so I didnt adjust anything really, hoping it would just work

Mostly lathe work, we made casing dies for Sig Sauer and occasionally some tiny pistons for golf cart brake calipers.

My boss also had a side business making training bats for baseball and softball. I did around a thousand of those.

Yes it's too high, needs to be just a touch below center

Opposite on a boring bar, it would need to be a touch above center.

Yep yep yep, I concur. Just a little fine tuning should clean it up.

Since you ran a lathe you know what's up, bananaman recently got a new job as lead millwright at a sawmill and is learning to run a lathe with no in person help.....and he's doing great :goingcrazy:

If you've found a center for the tail stock that tip will get you close. Another trick to get close is (with spindle off of course) bring the tool up to the bar stock with a 6" rule in between so the tool hold the rule there. Then step back and eyeball that, rule straight up and down. Then after facing the end off you can use that little teet to set center.

Embarrassing to admit, but I can't get the tool holder to go up or down for anything???

Never be embarrassed man....no one born with the knowledge. Looks like it has plenty of room to go down.

I've tried loosening every set screw I can find, and tapping with a dead blow, but it doesn't budge

Turn the handle on top, it releases the wedge then unscrew the nut on the tool holder.

Possibly running too slow as well; carbide cutters like the work to turn fairly smartly, something in the ~500 SFM (assuming that's a flavour of plain, mild steel). With work that small, you'll likely want the chuck speed towards the higher end of the range (>1500 RPM).

Tighten that top bolt back down. The piece below it should unlock the tool holder.
