If you wanted to you could loosen that top piece back up and get your insert at a little better angle too.

Then after mastering the bushing fabrication, have them purchase some bushing stock.

Another question... how do you get the locking handle to lock not on top of the chuck? That's where it tightens up right now, obviously won't work there. 2D08945D-E85B-472A-97E5-EEC63FC8A471.jpg

Remove the tool, loosen the top bolt and turn the tool post to where you need it. It also has another place where the tool can go.

Oh damn... that's a slow old beast; I figured it would be good for at least 1200... do you have any HSS tools you use instead of the carbide?

This is all that I've found in this shop for the lathe... not even any HSS stock to make something out of. image.jpg

Visual representation of an "oh shit!" Moment... turned the speed to 400 rpm at the chuck, not realizing that would speed up the auto feed as well... luckily I disengaged the feed as my hand was still on the lever just in time.02DDFFD7-A18E-4292-9018-85DB3F774FDB.jpg

Yay! Chips! I guess my boss isn't too confident in my newfound ability as he asked me to cut hunks out of a too large bushing and "squeeze it down" to work. Not sure how that's going to go... image.jpgF2CC75FF-5DCA-4569-B630-0B337F311174.jpg

We use this brick to prop the door open, Cole used it for a chair support on the edge of the sidewalk o_O

Pretty cool job @BananaMan it looks like you’re getting the hang of it quick!
While I did have someone there to answer technical questions for me I was largely self taught by just trying stuff.
They told me that it was the best way to get a feel for machine work, handed me a blueprint and left me alone.

I remember when I started at the machine shop I’m in now 26 years ago, we had a couple older manual lathes and I’d never been around one, the older guy showed me the basics and it was game on.

Thanks! I haven't crashed it yet... my roommate is a trained machinist with a mechanical engineering degree. He was telling me over the phone how to calculate how fast to spin the spindle. I cut him off and told him it only does 400 rpm. There was a couple seconds of silence before he said "just crank that bitch to max and leave it there."

When I was in Machinist Apprentice, one of the old timers, long hair biker dude always hollering at me to slow that thing down, speed kills he would say....
