So they have plenty of money to rent a car but don’t want to because it’s not an issue? And you being a non mechanic would let it slide because it looks ok to the untrained eye? Yeah ok that’s WHY there are state inspections to keep shady shit like this from happening.

Inspections are a crock of shit; Many states do just fine without them. You will NEVER be able to convince me to like safety inspections and emissions testing because I take care of my shit and I’m sick of paying a mechanic $50-$60 every year to tell me that my truck is in perfect working order!

Because of California’s stupid smog checks, my uncle has to register his 1977 VW Westfalia camper that won’t pass smog at his brother’s house in Texas to circumvent it; In pretty much any other state, you could put antique tags on it and totally avoid emissions testing, but…California :luvya:

I think I know a bit more about vehicle maintenance than the bureaucrats at PennDOT, and I will not be sad if Pennsylvania ever does away with inspections.

There’s nothing wrong with my uncle’s VW Bus; It was originally fuel injected, but the previous owner blew the engine or something and swapped in a carbureted motor from an older bus…

Because it’s an older engine, it produces more emissions than is acceptable for a 1977 vehicle and won’t pass smog; My uncle only drives the bus a few thousand miles a year, and any other state would just let him put antique tags on it!

I more or less agree with safety inspections, but sometimes they’re just nitpicky and that’s what’s obnoxious; Really? Failing a 10-year old sedan that is in otherwise perfect working order because of a busted headlight lens (and the headlight works)? :luvya:

I fully understand what you all are saying; However, I hold PA inspections in the same regard as I hold DUI checkpoints. I don’t drink and drive, and I take excellent care of my vehicle; Why should I have to suffer because of idiots who don’t perform basic maintenance on their vehicles and/or are stupid to get behind the wheel of a vehicle when they are drunk or high?!?!

So why can't they pay for the rental car then if money isn't an issue? If they don't like the rules of the state, time to go somewhere else. Never said inspections were worth a damn, in NJ they are "free" aka included in your rape tax. Buy a property and register a car in a state that doesn't require inspections. Generally, people that are smart enough to avoid inspection fees are smart enough to keep their vehicles in good working order. On the other end of the spectrum, the Karens that drive around with no brake pads and bald tires should be paying to get inspected monthly not yearly.

I don’t think they want to pay for a rental car for weeks on end because mom has her heart set on a Toyota and no dealers have the model she wants; I honestly think they should just put a new engine in the Camry Hybrid and get another 200K miles out of it!

Can you imagine how many people would drink the battery acid in their car if there wasn't a sign that said not to do so? My gosh, I wonder what life would look like WITHOUT inspections.

If it were me, I'd just drive around with a failed inspection and risk the ticket while shopping for a new car or swapping the engine.

And luckily cops haven’t been enforcing petty shit like that, at least not around here; Several of my neighbors drove around with expired inspection stickers for like six months before finally getting it done…

Good gracious what happened in here yesterday

Not gonna go down the inspections vs. no inspections rabbit hole much, but I will say I seen far more dangerous hoopties down in Mississippi where there was none. Insurance was much higher there too, so you put two and two together (also add into the factor alot more uninsured motorist there too). I'm very close to Maryland and work there. While I don't see as much junk there as MS, there's the occasional pickup that you know the frame is compromised looking at the cab/bed correlation. I see more junk with Historic tags to get around the emissions requirement there. Far as inspections here, some shops are more leaniant than others. I mean Hell I have a rusty beater that has a more broken headlight than Penn's friends Altima with a current sticker. They function so that's what they look at. My county is very rural so that has alot to do with it.

The proposed mileage tax would definitely hurt me. I just rolled over 10K miles in the truck this week. Bought it the week before Christmas 2020, so alot of driving. It'll be a while before they even think about implementing it. I am considering moving to Maryland, but only to be closer to work and amenities.
