Insurance paid for the damage and they’re just waiting for the body shop to have a slot available; I’d install the headlight but I don’t feel comfortable working on a vehicle that isn’t my own…

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You answered your own question. You have to suffer because of the other idiots. It's not about you, it's about the other guy.

So question for you or your friend.
Inspector “let’s you slide” with the busted lense. It is raining today so water now gets in the headlight housing and burns out the headlight bulb? Do you and your friend now spend the money on a new bulb? So the car is safe to drive. Or do you just continue to say F it it will get fixed in a couple weeks?

You know how many vehicles (even fairly new ones) I see driving around with a headlight out? Inspections are worthless because there are shops that look the other way, and more often than not the headlights burn out after the vehicle passed inspection; I say again…

States like Florida and Oklahoma do just fine without safety inspections; I’ve been to both Oklahoma and Florida and didn’t see anymore questionable shitboxes in those states than I do here in PA.

Also, I would get a new bulb; Those are cheap, and in most vehicles, easy to replace. The only bulb I’ve ever had to replace in my Taco was a license plate lamp, and it was fairly easy, though getting the bulb out was half the battle!

And some of these shops are downright incompetent…

My neighbor and his wife own a construction company in Philly; His wife drives a leased 2018 Infiniti SUV, on which the lease is up this year.

They have three kids and a business to run, plus we are in the middle of a global pandemic, so taking the Infiniti to get inspected isn’t at the top of the list and it expired like 4 months ago…

The Infiniti also needs new brakes; There is a garage next to the neighbor’s place of business, and they get their vehicles inspected there.

The Infiniti has these stupid wheel locks that only Infiniti makes the tool for, and the vehicle apparently never came with this tool; Despite this, the Infiniti dealer is insisting the vehicle came with one and won’t give her a new one unless she pays for it. She brought it to the shop in Philly to get the brakes replaced and get it inspected, but the shop doesn’t have this tool and is refusing to touch the vehicle; At this point, I think that all shops should have the necessary tool to remove manufacturer-specific wheel locks on a fairly common vehicle (i.e. A legit soccer mom-mobile that isn’t a Lamborghini or a Rolls-Royce). I also think that wheel locks cause more problems than they solve because I don’t really think people are stealing stock wheels from Infiniti crossovers (at least not in my neck of the woods), and I believe that a universal wheel lock would suffice…

So to sum it up everyone you know have problems with their vehicles. But it’s not their fault. It’s the guy doing the inspections. Do you know how many vehicles I have to search through to find a wheel lock. Because that should be part of my job to find the wheel lock amongst the beach chairs, golf clubs, soccer equipment. So now the mechanic has to buy a tool to remove the lock because soccer mom can’t find the key. Would it be ok if the shop charged extra to remove the wheel locks. Or is that just a mechanic ripping someone off?

You realize it not about you. You and most guys on this site are car guys. So we take care of our shit. Most people don’t. You don’t drink and drive like most of us on here. But the rules are not made for us. It’s made for the people that don’t follow the rules. If everyone drove at a safe and reasonable speed would not need speed limits. But you know how that goes.

nice! How big you going? What ever it is, double it :D

it sounds like Karen should take a coffee break from selling her eBay trinkets and find her wheel lock. What’s she going to do if she gets a flat? Blame the tire guy when he charges extra to remove that wheel to repair?
