Transfer case fluid option?

Has anyone tried Liqui-Moly-Top-Tec-5100 75w GL-4 in the transfer case?

Looks like a possible economical alternative.

I use liqui moly in the wife’s Macan. It’s a pretty good German brand of oil and I’d have no concerns with it.

I don't see that Liquid-Moly specifically list that as a suitable replacement for

Toyota 08885-81080. I had planned to use Redline MT-LV in my 2018, but then I sold it before it was time. If I get to 30k with this one, I plan to use Redline MT-LV (or something that specifically shows compatibility to prevent warranty questions).

 

Check your Owner's Manual for correct viscosity and specification.

Some require the 75w GL-5 specification.

It will probably work if your region doesn't see much subzero temps. Viscosity at 40C is very similar, 33 Cst vs 31 Cst. Viscosity at -40C is two and half times that of Red Line MT-LV. There's a partial overlap in OEM specs the two oils are claimed to satisfy:

3rd gens call for a special Toyota-branded low-viscosity gear oil in the T-case. The automatically generated Amazon link at the bottom of this page has it listed at $80.58 a can. Did you end up using the Liqui Moly? I want to change my fluid and wanted to know if anyone else has used this. I plan on using the Liqui Moly 75w90 for the trans and diffs

 

The Redline equivalent to LiquiMoly 5100 appears to be Redline DCTF(dual clutch transmission fluid).

I've used the Redline https://www.redlineoil.com/mt-lv-70w75w for 25k miles now in my Tacoma Transfer case. Not a long time to tell the difference but I had been using Redline oils in transmissions on my previous Saabs for a combined 300,000+ miles. Saab manual transmissions weren't known for longevity and I got 270k miles out of one by using Redline MTL and 90k out of another before selling them.

 

bumping this - has anyone tried it? On Liqui Moly site it now shows Toyota 08885-81081, which is the toyota t-case oil.

I would just go with the MT-LV, but it comes in quarts... the transfer case just happens to call for 1 Liter. Makes the price difference $18 vs $46 without having to use 90% of the 2nd redline bottle. The US not using the metric system is so obnoxious.

This^^. I bought 2 quarts of MT-LV, but if I was worried about the extra $23 then I'd just buy 1 quart and add a little of the old oil back in.

I drained the OEM fluid, pumped some MT-LV in, then drained again to flush out the rest of the old stuff.
Put 1.1-ish quarts in and now I have about a 1/2 quart left over, and I'll only need to buy 1 quart next time... Don't feel like it was a waste.

 

I'm leaning towards trying the Liqui Moly, them listing the toyota part # on their site is giving me some confidence. They also have a new GL4

75W-90 I can use for my transmission instead of the redline MT90. I've used MT90 in previous vehicles and know it's good stuff no argument there, just looking at cost here.

3L of the Liqui Moly 5400 75W-90 + 1L of the 5100 75W totals to $72 shipped... vs redline would be $92 going with just 1QT of the MT-LV, $115 if I got two.

 

I guess the liqui moly 5100 is actually only $16 msrp. This is looking like the best combo now

 

I used the expensive Toyota OEM fluid. One can is all you need if you don’t spill any.

Ah yes, see someone talking about $10 vs $46 options trying to save coin and come in swingin that thang because you spent $80... thank you for sharing.

 

I can understand if someone might be on a tight budget and needs to look for less expensive options. I can afford OEM and my truck deserves it.
