    Afternoon gents!

2015 Tacoma Sport 4.0L w/ 66k miles started surging last night on my way home from work. This morning started fine to go grab the mail, this afternoon went to go run some errands and wouldn't start, no check engine light but pulled codes P0171/P0174 system too lean Bank 1 and Bank 2.

Checked for vacuum leaks - can't find any obvious.
Pulled MAF and cleaned - didn't fix.
    O2 sensor connections look good.

Have seen several people with this issue finding the strainer on their fuel pump clogged. I always have this sucker get to E on my way back and forth to work (900 mile round trip) to get me to the next gas station (desolate stretches of road) so makes sense that the pump would be the issue.

    - Toyota wants $500 and some change for a new pump.
    - Advanced Auto and equivalent stores want $350 'ish for a Delphi unit.

Anyone have experience running these Delphis? If I can manage to save some coin I'd rather! Also was wondering is there any other items I should pick up? Gaskets/o-rings, filters or the such?

    TIA!

I wouldn't run Delphi. I have seen too many of them be issues on initial install for me to confidently recommend them. Stick to Denso and Denso only. Even they have had issues, but they have had considerably less than what I've seen with Delphi.

Oh and for god sakes stop running your truck down to the very wire. Your pump will thank you if you don't for the reasons you highlighted above.

Denso doesn't show to make a pump for my Tacoma - Looked direct on their website and any google searchs don't seem to find anything. Not even Rock Auto....I would love to not run my truck empty all the time, you ever worked out of New Mexico/West Texas? Some times gas stations are a LONG stretch apart.

So which is it, one says Yes and other no to Delphi.

Ahh. Gotcha. How about keeping a 5 gallon tank reserve in your back seat for emergencies or to at least keep you above the float level of E? If you have space for that I would do that.

As for the pump there is a physical pump replacement outside of the module available from Denso. Usually parts stores carry them who carry Denso. I just can't remember what the part number was.

Do you want to roll the dice and possibly have to do it multiple times or do the job once? Regardless, you roll the dice with any replacement part and there is no way around that these days with how cheap things are being made. I just bet my money more on the OE parts house brand. (Denso is Toyota)

Also, the fuel pump direct replacement would literally be about $200 cheaper than a module replacement. $100 some odd dollars for the pump and over $300 some odd for the Delphi module assembly, but I'm no mathematician. :notsure:

I'm out of this argument now. You have my answer. I'm also not a parts snob with stuff. You have to do what's best for you and not just the internet.

Hey bud I'm not trying to create an argument, just don't want to have to do this again for awhile if I can avoid it. This truck is currently my only transportation until I can get my Cummins going.

Yeah but it would still need the internal strainer bro, and there is no getting past that. The strainer gets clogged due to junk at the bottom of the tank, then overheat the pump due to lack of flow and it's still going to be a problem. External filter or not.

    yeah, that’s true.
I’ve never seen a higher mesh filter?
I honestly can’t say, I’ve seen what the the 1st gen trucks run.
But I know they had an external filter?

I personally don’t like getting below 1/4 tank.
But this doesn’t sound like an option for OP?

They did away from them in the 2nd gens. To this day I don't run one on my boosted setup after replacing my OE pump and just run a strainer. No issues whatsoever, but I run an AEM retrofit pump in mine so it's worlds better over OE. I run mine til the light comes on and go fill up. Usually by the time I fill when it gets to the light that's 17.4 - 17.6 gallons. Leaving 3.4 - 3.6 gallons in reserve based on their 21 gallon fuel tank spec tank.

I know you're not. I was referencing the running on E comment. Look I use to be an independent line tech as well as an Chevy tech. I've put everything from the cheapshit to OE stuff in every make and model of car I wouldn't hesitate running a Delphi if you said AutoZone brand then I'd tell ya no. If it pukes that's what warranties are for. I mean we buy these trucks and Yota is having to replace the frames, warranty all sorts of issues of premature breakages, etc. You got a brain and some critical thinking skills it seems that's your biggest weapon.

i also wouldn't just be throwing a pump at it though. Do some more diagnostics. Like did you clear the code after cleaning the MAF and stuff and it came back, have you checked fuel pressure and volume. What is the quality of gas that you are getting (not just 87 or 93), have you put it on a scanner and read what the MAF sensor was reading, smoked the intake to see if it might not have a hairline crack, etc. Throwing parts and time guessing at each possibility is the biggest waste of money. Every manufacturer has a lot of TSBs about quality of fuel and if you're in the area im thinking you're in then sometimes getting quality fuel is an issue. You may also have an issue further down the line of the fuel system after the pump from debris.

Are you saying you delete the mesh filter and ran a strainer on the AEM?
If so, maybe OP would consider this an option?

I know it’s a BAD idea, but of course, e being me, the did wonder what would happen if you left the filter off? And run an external filter? Again, it was just a thought, I don’t even know if it’s possible. I’m sure one day I’ll find out exactly what all is involved with the pump and replacement. No way I’m trading trucks with the prices of them now. I’ll be driving mine for a long, long time. (Hopefully :fingerscrossed:)

The mesh filter and the strainer are one in the same to me. I have the ability to run more options in there because of the housing delete I had to do to the module internally since the stock pump is no longer in there. The setup I run is actually a large filter made for a Toyota Highlander if I remember correctly. It's way larger that little pillow the stock setup has so it has more space to run fuel through before it clogs. I'll see if I can find it, though I know I've posted it in my blower thread. Hang on.

@TnShooter 68021 Bosch. Fits a 2009 style Toyota Highlander. It looks to be cotton but they labeled it a strainer.

Also, I would never run the pump without some sort of pre-filter. One large piece of debris gets lodged in the pump itself and you might as well kiss the pump goodbye and maybe even your engine.

I see, so you modified the housing.
    As seen here?

Sorry OP, we went off topic on you.
But maybe you and I both can learn something here.

Exactly. That photo includes the exact pre- filter setup that I mentioned above which I suggested in page one of my thread and was taken by one of the members who actively participates in there.

I found that picture by searching for “fuel tank pump baffle”
At one time, there were pictures floating around here of the process and the “box” the pump assembly goes in. I haven’t been able to find them since.

You know the thread I’m talking about?

I do indeed. I haven't seen it in a while because it gets lost in the useless nonsense and drivel that is posted here (light bars, tires, Friday threads and what have you) but it's here somewhere if you look hard enough. That box you are describing is labeled a module by the way.

I know it's one of my guys setups because if you observe closely you'll see a box in the background that says US in capital letters and rgchar below it, Magnuson Superchargers. That plus I know of one or two guys who did the retrofit who is running Aeromotive Stealth pumps in their setup. Lol.

See there, i already learned something.
I would never have guessed it was a “module”.
I would have called it a “baffle box”
