FUEL PUMP RFI ( ham radio related)

This is some seriously long reading going on here... I don't know if it has been mentioned, but since it is your antenna picking up the "noise", can not an inline filter be made on the antenna feedline, notch filter maybe, to filter out that particular noise? I don't know if that makes any sense? Just throwing out a thought.

 

Ehhhhhhh, I could get a notch filter or band pass filter, but the only problem with that is that it would render that frequency group useless. This noise spans more than just 20 meters or 14 MHZ, its pretty wide. I just zoomed in on 20 because it was its easier to see at that time. It spans from at least 3MHZ clear through 28 MHZ. It does get better as you get higher.

 

In this case, it would be beneficial to put it on the toroids in the tank and probably some at the external connection to the top of the pump housing. It would prevent the motors " noise" from using the wiring harness as a radiator, AKA antenna.

Something is seriously WRONG? I know I'm stating an obvious, but there is some serious RF trash interference going on? It should NOT be that bad?

All I'm getting at is you should not have to go that far into your "electrical", if you will, to squash RF interference?

Eeeeeeeeeewwwwww 11 meters , no JK , yeah it is also up around 26-27 MHZ but not nearly as bad.

 

As far as width and 26-27 MHz, are you looking at harmonics? seems the (smeared) fundamental is about 14 and that is the target.

Is there a way you can use your analyzer antenna/probe to physically pinpoint where the RFI is coming from?
The Fuel ECU (I think it is bolted to the frame but not sure) is definitely separate from the tank pump assembly.
You may be able to see the noise strengthen as you physically approach the source?

Edit: spitballing here...it might not be hard to wrap the ECU in a faraday cage.
Even if it is imperfect, it may point you in a direction.

 

The fuel pump ecu is on the inside of the driver side frame right about where the double cab door is.
I ran out of time and energy to mess with it any more this week. I’m 99% sure it’s the FP cause I’ve seen that type of RFI before on larger scales from my washing machine ( direct drive ) and my wife’s treadmill. All similar types of motor control

 

I may be misunderstanding something here...but the washing machine and treadmill would each have an ECU like controller.
There was probably no reason to isolate the source...but the ECU and pump are very physically divorced in the truck
and if you can determine there is some noisy component in the ECU, it might be suppressible.
...I don't blame you for taking a break...but think about the ECU. 14MHz is awfully high and I am leaning there
rather than the pump.

 

Did you try cleaning the ground cable on the battery? Jk, cool thread. Keep it up lads. U have the fuel pump recall done?

Here is why I believe it’s not the FP ECU

not sure if you got a chance to see the video where I unplugged the harness to and from the FP ECU, it stopped completely.. ( still ran with residual fuel in the lines).

so that ecu when the output was unplugged, was still powered and receiving all signals into it and should have been sending output voltage, but being the harness was not plugged in on the output , it never ran the pump motor.

i think i watched 3 videos. the audio is low on each in the beginning and i did miss you were unplugging from ECU.
i will watch again and see what i missed.
Also pointing at the pump is that it starts and stops with the priming.
Making more sense now but I am not 100% on abandoning the ECU...yet.

 

Yeah im not sure what the deal is with the audio and my Iphone, it fades the audio in over like a 10 second time and its annoying and cant find the fix to it.

 

i just looked at the videos and i missed again where you unplugged the ECU. can you repost it. I may be crazy.

 

It may not even be here..... i just tried to look for it.. let me go back and see if its still on my YT ...... It showed how quiet it was with the ecu unplugged but running
