    They were all Freemasons (except that degenerate Jefferson - no one would accept him) and whiskey is a longstanding Masonic tradition (outside of the lodge).

    Among Shriners, a pickled liver is a requirement. All Shrine temples have full bars in them!

    It is true that many of the Founding Fathers were Freemasons, Including George Washington, Ben Franklin..... it has long been questioned about Jefferson, but to my knowledge, there has never been any solid evidence that he was a member of the Fraternity.

    Each State in the U.S. has it's own sovereign Masonic jurisdiction ("Grand Lodge"), and can set their own rules as far as alcohol being allowed inside any Masonic building (which includes Shrine, Scottish Rite, York Rite, all others) that have buildings, or meet in that State. In California, Masonic bodies (any of them) can have alcohol inside their buildings, but it cannot be stored there overnight. That would require a State ABC license, and therefore, open up the building/group to mandatory State inspections, which in California, we have voted [within the Fraternity] to not get tangled up in that mess, so we can't store alcohol overnight.

    Jefferson wasn't a mason - but the story is that he tried to join on multiple occasions. His petitions were read and he was blackballed, presumably for his well-known "dalliances."

    Basically, the consideration was that he wasn't moral enough for any of the lodges he applied to.

    Ironically - either someone was slipping him a masonic education on the sly or he was just that smart to figure out many of the lessons himself - much of his writing hinted at an understanding of the masonic enlightenment ideas of the time period.
