It's crazy how expensive 38 and 357 ammo is right now.

If you have brass, and if you can find powder and primers…

I’m working on putting a reloading setup together myself right now, based around a Lee Hand Press as I don’t have a real shop space in my house.

I just found a few boxes at academy of 38 special Winchester white box, first time I have seen it out in the wild in over a year. I think it was $35 for 50. not great, glad to have a little more now though.

Academy had 1 box of 50 .357 158gr sjsp for $50 about a month ago... They still had that box when I left lol but I did pick up a box of 60 gr Hornady sp .223 for my daughter to hunt with this year for $20... It's hard to think about spending a dollar a round for .223 but that's easier than a dollar a round for 38/357... And it is hunting ammo so justified

Last night was the practice match for the fall .22 bullseye league. Shooting my Model 17 with a ultradot matchdot. Scored a 683-3x and was predictably the only shooter with a revolver.

I did a thing on my lunch break today. A 38/44 has been languishing in my LGS for several months, so I went to visit it again. The shop owner said why visit when they can go home with you let’s make a deal. After some back and forth we both ended up happy. Since we got sent home early for a snow day at work (I live in Alaska) I stopped by the local library to checked out the standard catalog of Smith and Wesson. It’s a 38/44 heavy duty model of 1950 produced in either 1954 or 1955 based on the serial number.25841BD0-A242-417A-87FD-E229BD66C5C6.jpg

    Some more photos

Internals looked good if dry and thankfully original. It also appears that it was at one point owned or in possession of the Pueblo Police Dept and/or one “J. Lindsey” on or around 2/4/1978.

    More heavy duty content.

New shoes were needed for the 38/44 HD. I tried the Pachmayr grip adapter but was less than thrilled. I’ve heard good things about the guy out of Thailand making and selling grips on eBay (https://www.ebay.com/str/jaruwanp ), so I decided to try a set. They fit fantastic, both my hand and the gun, and look great IMO

S&W Model 65 3" in stainless. .357 ... my first of many firearms and still my favorite 35 years later - lots of time in woods with this beauty on my hip. I'm better with this guy than any of my other handguns, just feels right :)
