    Hello,

I just bought a 2021 Tacoma Offroad. I get a clunk sound when moving from 4wd to 2wd. Is this normal? My old 4runner did this so I figured it's probably normal.

    Thanks.

I’ve never owned a “shift on the fly” that didn’t. Always gonna be a little stress in the system when disengaging. Totally normal.

My 2001 tundra would make a clunk when going into and out of 4wd. Mostly when at a stop. This 2020 tacoma is so smooth all the time whether in 4hi, or 4lo. You never know when it engages, or disengages except for the leds on the dash. Doesn't matter if stopped or when under power. Imo, this is the way it should be on these trucks.

Try to shift when you’re coasting with no throttle or brake, it’s much smoother.

Normal. It tends to shift smoother if moving in a straight line at constant speed. It will clunk harder if there is any bind up in the drivetrain like if you are forced to drive it onto dry pavement and turn while in 4wd (always avoided if possible)

I Agree with peoples answers. Doing this always seem to make a little noise. Keep off the throttle, and go straight as you disengage .

didn't know your supposed to be moving when disengaging. we use the 4x4 on the fsr then when it hits pavement pull over stop and disengage. always get the clunk. Next time will pull over, slow to a crawl and then disengage.

You don’t have to be moving, but it’s less finicky if you are moving. 4lo is different and requires a full stop.

No need to do that. Just turn the switch to 4X2 while driving at any reasonable speed. I'd advise doing so BEFORE you get back to pavement. Unless you NEED 4X4 right to the pavement. The only time you need to stop is to go into or out of low range. Even then it works better if you shift to neutral and ALMOST come to a stop. If still coasting at 2-3 mph it engages/disengages easier than if at a dead stop. But it won't engage any faster than about 2-3 mph and you have to be in neutral.

This is normal, oh also when you use 4lo and the crawl control, it sounds like someones shaking a bag of bolts in your engine, this is also normal!
