Have you tried running a higher octane gas to see if it goes away? At least it could be a temp fix until it's resolved with the TSB or other repair

I’ve read through a good amount. Sounds like most of the symptoms are there, and people have been seeing good results. A couple had problems but it seemed like something else was going on. I’m just confused why it showed up after towing.

Yep. Usually I run 89 but switched up to multiple tanks of 91 lately and it had no difference.

I have an appt tomorrow at a dealer to talk TSB or what could be causing it. I’ll report back with good/bad/neutral news!

They did the TSB but it didn’t fix it. I think I did get a little better mpg and feels a tiny bit more torquey though. As for the ping it is the throw out bearing in the trans like some other folks have experienced on here. I’ve been driving with it for almost 10k miles and it’s been fine. Another mechanic said not to worry and just replace it when I need a new clutch. It’s even gone away within the past few months too… not sure why. But I’m not worried about it. It makes sense that it started after pulling a trailer (up hills in San Francisco) cause that probably strained it a little more I’m guessing

The TOB tick or "chirp" is common in manual trans Tacomas, 1st and 2nd gens. I've replaced my clutch twice and it always comes back soon after (even with a new bearing/clutch kit). I just live with it. I actually haven't heard it in a year or so, it tends to come and go.

Rarely ever hear of an actual TOB failure on these trucks though I believe a few have had it happen.
