I had planned to do that too but I got impatient to see how it looked on the truck and put it on.
I was going to paint the letters mgm to match the truck but you've made a good argument for black.
There are some easy to release clips on the back side of each letter but there is some super strong adhesive that bonds them on. I almost broke one letter trying. If I could buy some replacement letters I'd remove them. Otherwise it's gonna be painted in place.

Edit: Tufskinz offers some already colored but at $46, I don't know.

I ordered Tufskinz inserts for the letters off Amazon, but I went with silver. They had gloss black available on Amazon but also had matte black directly thru their site.

Do these hang down any lower than stock skid? I can’t ever tell cause everyone takes these close up shots. I have interest in one but have no intentions on lifting my truck.

I didn't measure before I took the old sheet metal pan off but I'd guess very little if any at all. The air dam that was originally on mine was much lower.

The front does just a little as it has metal spacers built into it so it clears any truck parts or brackets

Well, it came down to either spending some time removing the old letters, then the goo, and finally spending $45+ on new letters....Or painting what's on there.
I masked off the letters (about 30 minutes, taking my sweet time), bought a $2 bottle of Testors gloss black model paint, and brush painted them (3 coats at 5 minutes each). I probably would have taken more time to just remove the goo from the skid plate. Very happy the way it turned out.

no. A factory aluminum ‘skid plate’ will not add any more weight significant enough to affect mileage. If that were the case, every gas fill up, grocery store trip, lap dog in back seat, etc would affect mileage.

The third gen skid weighs a whopping 12.4lbs.

I like the metal look on the shackles, and the black TRD on the white plate. I went a different route..

I don’t disagree with the point about fuel economy, but I think you stated the incorrect weight for the trd pro skid plate. The post you linked says 27lbs. I’m also skeptical that the splash guard that comes on the OR weighs 12.5lbs, so I’m a bit perplexed by the linked post. The TRD Pro skid plate is beefy enough (and costly enough) that I don’t understand the ROI of installing it only for looks. I’d think you could get something lighter and cheaper that looked just as good. You can barely see it anyway. I don’t think many people even notice mine. Maybe people that are 6” tall notice it.

OP stated it was a TRD OR skid, not a pro

I could be wrong, pictures posted look similar to 2nd gen TRD OR skid plate, as there is no ‘pro’ model skid. Perhaps the ‘pro’ third gen skid is different. With that said, my point about mpg’s stands in the event of 27lbs instead of the 12. Still minimal.
