Tailgate screws not flush

Hello all,
I installed the locking tailgate on my 2019 Tacoma and when I reinstalled the tailgate cover I can't get any of the screws to go back flush. They go in and stop about an eighth of an inch from flush. What gives?
By the way, the auto tailgate lock install was simple and works great.

Its put back together wrong. The top piece goes on top of the lower piece

 

OP - Did this resolve your difficulty?

 

Notches in your pic go under the bolt head.

 

looks to be put back in the wrong order, top plastic piece needs to at the bottom.

 

How did you get your beans above the frank?

 

Maybe his beans are bigger than the frank

GREAT movie! And yeah, put together wrong.

 

Been there, done it wrong first time too...after installing the locking tailgate. 5 minute redo. We all gotta' learn.

Yep, it looks right when you do it wrong.

 

And don't forget the threaded inserts you screw into are the cheapest plastic. Hand tighten gently. The inserts are replaceable but it's a cheap, crappy design just like the inserts used to mount the speakers.

 

Just noticed that on the lower screws on the tailgate. Dealer installed the lock. I guess I’ll have to have them fix it when it goes in next month for inspection and oil change.
