    Hi
I have a 2016 Tacoma and I live in Florida. Think was made in Mexico. It is super white color. It had the peeling paint behind the drivers side rear door window. I had that door repainted. Thought the peeling paint issue was over. Recently I see the same thing happening behind the window of passenger rear door! What to do? Keep hoping Toyota would step up and paint the truck Very disappointed because over all it is a good truck that I would like to keep but the peeling paint is so ugly and makes the truck look beat up. All this paint is getting expensive. Anyone have any advice on this problem?

Sorry to say but there are is a giant thread of people with 16-17 super white trucks with the same paint failure issues. Might have started with the production move to Mexico. Might be environmental rules. Might just be Toyota getting cheap.

Scream at Toyota Corporate with the rest of them and pray for a recall. The best bet is a re-paint or a vinyl wrap. Time will tell when we hit 5 years on later models if this was limited to the early production.

Thanks guys! I might look into getting a wrap. That’s a good idea! Well so far I’ve had the one rear door painted, then I clipped a pole with the driver’s side front fender so they painted into the front door. But the hood needs painted as there is no clear coat- back of cab as well. Turtle wax just doesn’t cut it at this point. Do you think this dullness could be buffed out?

A friend of mine got this fixed under warranty here in AZ.

"if anyone has the same issue of the Tacoma super white paint peeling over
Time and having issues with convincing them to cover this issue under warranty I finally was able to get mine covered. This took three dealerships and finding the right person and manager that are understanding. Earnhardt Toyota was able to get mine approved and he covered under warranty as the service director I found out is the one that had to submit it and many of them at other places don’t want to."

Gotcha. Mine is a 2016 and when I stated asking they said the paint warranty was up. I probably should take it back to the dealer where I bought but I think they’ve changed hands. Paint is expensive though.

Unfortunately buffing clear takes small amounts off to remove surface oxidation to make it look crisp again. If you don’t have clear coat left you can’t fix it, it’s a lack of material or a failure of paint to clear coat bonding.

Dullness is likely due to excessive waxing with an unnecessary harsh compound. Waxes have abrasives in them that remove contaminants from the clear coat by removing the top layer of the clear coat (or more precisely scratching them off the clear coat). If you use a compound stronger than the what is needed, it will slowly eat away the clear coat. One the clear coat is gone, there is nothing left to protect the paint. So it will start peeling off, cracking etc.

What type of wax you have been using? For just shining, I would use the least abrasive wax.

    That sucks B*lls mate!
    - I cant think of of a more depressing defect to have in a vehicle...
it is not like you can replace body panels as you would a mechanical defect. A replacement of a defective part makes you pretty much whole...
Ending-up with a re-painted vehicle... does not quite feel the same.

No abrasives should be used unless your paint is already in bad condition... There are many waxes intended to protect - not restore that contain no abrasives at all...

There are several threads on peeling white paint. Mine has the same problem. Toyota doesn’t want to cover it either so I am fighting them AGAIN (it did it before).

Tnx. I’ve just been using regular title wax that you put on and buff off by hand. I think the clear coat was already gone. Somebody said Toyota mixed the clear coat with the white paint instead of putting the clear on top. I think this did not work right.

I'm not a third gen, but have the same color and the same problem. I've taken it to toyota and called Toyota Corp many times and they tell me the same thing

It's the same paint with active recalls on OTHER toyota models though there is no recall specifically for the Tacoma at this time. Best bet is to either wait for a recall if you're so lucky OR fix it yourself.

If enough of us make enough noise they might do the right thing and fix the issue hopefully

I have a 2017 super white that was made in Baja as well and i have a small 1/4 inch rust spot on my roof right in the center where the roof meets the glass windshield. I also have 2 rather large spots in the center of the hood where if u catch it in the right light you can see that it has began to fade. Also the fact that the super white is a single stage paint which I didn't know when buying is extremely disappointing. I keep my car in the shade for the most part so to see how it is already showing signs of poor quality paint work is disheartening to say the least.

The paint on my 2012 was peeling along the window seals, under the hood and door frames. Of course Toyota said there is no recall or service bulletins on this for Tacomas but they do have them on their other models like Corollas etc. Basically told sorry you’re A** out.

I went to my local Toyota dealership last year and the service manager said of course my truck is out of warranty but to my surprise he agreed to pay for half the cost of repainting only the areas that needed it. Not the entire truck unfortunately. So the estimated cost was around $10k and I agreed to pay half $5k. It was in my opinion better than nothing.

I recommend going to your local dealership and asking what they can do for you.

Holy ffff $5,000?!?!?! That's a rip off. Don't go to your dealer for a paint job. You should have checked a body shop man. Also, stick to the thread that already has 14 pages mentioned in post 2.

It's done and over with. That was a quote from a local body shop they use. All four doors, the roof, under the hood. I'm okay with it thanks.
