That's how I did mine. I wired it to be always hot.

Does anyone have the instructions specific for installing SET Part # 00016-00225 in a 2021 Tacoma, or are the linked instructions for installing Part # 00016-00222 in a 2017 Tacoma applicable?

This part was available as a port-installed accessory when I bought my Tacoma, but I passed on it because I thought the "two USB ports" supplied by Toyota in the center console would be sufficient for rear seat passengers. (Front seat passengers are taken care of in my Tacoma with the data/ charging port and 12v outlet in the dash, and the Qi pad in the center console.) I was wrong. First, one of the two ports is a USB-C, which will rarely if ever get used. Second, both ports are at the bottom of the console storage box, buried under its contents, and are extremely awkward to use.

Has anyone used a Toyota dealer to install these dual rear USB ports? SET wanted $129 parts and labor, which I think is an okay price, given the part is around $40 and the labor involves disassembling the center console, drilling out the rear panel, wiring the ports, and reassembling the console. I am wondering what a Toyota dealer should charge for this.

One curious thing I noted is the Sparks Parts web site says that the USB ports Part #225 is NOT compatible with my 2021 Tacoma. That seems to be incorrect, but if anyone knows this to be true, please let me know.

Just buy a USB-C to whatever you need cable.

    USB-C is the future…

That said, installation instructions should be in the kit. SET/GST are pretty good about that.
If not, there are plenty of threads about adding things in that back spot. I have that particular option on mine and can take some pictures if it comes down to it. GST was big on adding this option.

My issue is not so much that Toyota supplied a USB-C port, but that they buried it at the bottom of the center console box. It's too much of a hassle to plug and unplug from there, and I hate having random charging wires hanging about, so it's never getting used from there.

I was wondering about that. Is there an installation time assigned to the instructions? I'm thinking of having my dealer install it, but I am not sure what would be a fair labor charge.

A suggestion would be to open it up. I suspect they used the round style. (It’s going to have the circular body, positive/negative wires). If so, install a traditional cigarette lighter plug (what they used to put there) and move the current installed plug to the rear. Problem solved. Use the SET instructions to wire in the relocated USB outlet.

I would estimate a “trained” person should be able to install in 1-1.5 hours. Find their hourly rate and multiply. However, I would think there’s room to discount as it’s not a certified skilled task. A lot depends on dealership/Service Manager as they all have different goals/rules/standards that affect the way they book this type of work.
I actually had a case of a dealer who stated “We don’t touch tires. We won’t install, replace, or do anything related to tires. Find a tire shop.”

Install instructions are here (although no Tacoma, it should still be pretty easy to figure out):

Is the only way to add another data port using a hub?
Seems like all the splitters I find are charging only.

You wouldn’t be able to use them both simultaneously, but ‘could’ wire in parallel. I’m sure one of the wiring custom folks here could make that with more info. The reason you don’t see more of it is because aftermarket headunits have this covered and factory is built for single design/function.

I’m pretty sure in an older thread someone posted that they had multiple usb devices and all of them showed up.

I’d have to dig to find it but the small cube USB adapter was unavailable and Amazon, new egg, etc. kept showing charging only.

There are some USB hubs that will likely do the job. But you’re asking the headunit to support it. That’s another matter entirely. For that, it’s chipset testing and “ain’t nobody got time for that!”
