i agree.
Some of those people design stuff that change the world.
Others , not so much.

Many, many years ago I went to a Chrysler regional meeting with my service manager.
And I was up front listening to the dog and pony show.
Talking about time studies , engineering, assemblies, etc.
They made the mistake of pointing to me and asking my thoughts.
Yea after 15 min they had to take a break and I was asked not to come back.
Yea the truth hurts..

 

Could be Engineer and Bean counter making a compromise and that's the end result !!

 

I went from the machine shop into the design side of things ( after going back to school at 46 years old ). I absolutely hate working with engineers, biggest bunch of clueless fooks to ever crawl out of the ooze.

Over the past two hears my boy has been scraping and scrounging for a different direction
With his Monte Carlo.
The car now sports a Stock(for now)LS motor.
This car has deep family roots and he drives this car in honor of his Grandfather.
Today he brought it to the strip for his first shake down runs.
He is not afraid to put this on the track…
No excuses.
Traction problems will be needed to be addressed before the LS gets some massaging

At least one theory I have as to why people with such significant amount of education as an Engineer can still be so clueless in real world situations is this. In Engineering school (as well as most University Degree programs), the instructors are themselves nothing but pure academics. They completed their own educations, and went straight into teaching. So every homework problem you ever get, is a purely made up, hypothetical situation. All you have to do is get the "right" answer, the answer that the book says is right............. (example: either you get 3.14159... or your answer is wrong).

Of all the professors I had, only 2 had ever actually worked in industry. This one had worked for 30+ years as a satellite communications Engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, before he retired and then went into teaching. Not only did he have the most fascinating stories of the sorts of real world things we young Engineering students might actually encounter someday, most of his homework assignments were for actual, real world things. Such as "design an amplifier circuit that can accept [...] as inputs, and generate an output of [....] that would be used to drive a servo motor to rotate an antenna on a satellite in earth orbit". As long as your design produced an acceptable output, you were good to go. Just like in the real world. so you can see exactly how what you are learning to do in the classroom directly applies in the real world. and you also see how certain things would just not be feasible in the real world, but were perfectly ok in the academic sense.

That is what's missing from most Engineering programs. You learn artificial scenarios that fit the mathematical forumlae, and so are "correct", but you aren't learning that there are also going to be real world conditions that a truly successful design is going to have to incorporate. Once you take many Engineers out of the "book" world and into the real world, they are lost.

 

Yes the love for engineers/ architects. I have had some good ones, and I have had some clueless #^^*%#*^%%%.
