'98 was the same year it happened here. October of '98. I had a electrician help me wire my cord up. It looks a little janky but passed the smoke test. There's a little fuse panel in the detached garage that runs to the outside main breaker below the meter. My cord hooks into that fuse panel box and enough cord to set the generator outside of garage door, or next to it if I had to. I figured out and labeled all the areas in the house where the indoor breakers go, so I'd just shut most everything off and run necessities. Heat a dish network

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I am ready My Diesel Trailblazer works just fine with around 400 gallons of fuel I can go a few days.

Now Since I have this set up the electric only goes out for short time periods .

Was it Hurricane Sandy my electric was out 9 days.

I have the whole house available with a lock out switch.
So I monitor my usage with a watt meter. I just shut lights off when not in rooms.

    New poll.

I put a plug in the shop and plug the Miller Bobcat welder with an 8,500 watt generator and backfeed the house. It burns a gallon of gas an hour under load. I flip the main off being fed in from the power company. It works but is nowhere near code, the cord I use has a male plug on each end

My wife told me yesterday we were getting a kitten. I said we aren’t going to discuss it? She said nope, we aren’t discussing anything else. Fine with me, I love kittens :D

I have a buddy in hvac and that's what he was trying to tell me to do, I already have a 220v outlet near my carport and he said he'd make me a male to male to backfeed my house. I'm going to price a whole home standby generator first but the other is still an option too.

Hate to ask, but is there a problem with doing it that way?

It's a code violation to have the male plug ends hot.

    A thing or two...
I think I missed a poll, but, for the current poll, I'm working on it. Solar w/ battery though instead of regular generator. The panels were installed, but waiting on the battery that's backordered.

    SLS?

If you forget to disconnect the main, you're back feeding the power lines, and could light up the guy in the bucket truck trying to get lines fixed. Also hot male plug is big no no.

Yeah I know it’s not right, hopefully if we ever move I can get a generator and transfer switch and have it the right way.
