Any tips on the install? Special tools or anything? How long did it take you to install yours? And what gear oil are your running, and any additives or anything?

Think I have had it in for about 5000 miles. At the time I purchased it I had no air compressor or air tools. The truck had been untouched/unmodified since I brought it home from the dealer in late 2001.
So nearly every single bolt had to have a penatrant soaking and breaker barred loose. 8 axle flange bolts and the driveshaft bolts as well as all differential bolts.the drums on the rear were very stubborn and nearly took me an hour per side. Then once I got the pig out and started looking at the fitment for the locker is when the crap hit the fan.
In the manual it said to knock out the pin that holds the pinion shaft in and pull the pinion shaft out. Then the side gears and spider gears. WRONG!!!
Stock gearing in my 4 banger happens to be 4.56's. The ring gear was to thick to allow the pinion shaft to drop out.
Oh, did I mention that 4 of my friends had volunteered to help and 4 hrs into this I am still working alone. Almost squashed myself with the diff when I pulled it. Had it laying on my chest while i'm on my back on a creeper.
So anyways.....back to the ring gear. I have no vice. Mistake.
Finally an older friend stopped by( one that didn't even volunteer to help) to check on my progress. We then fabricated a" vice" out of 2x4's to hold the diff in place while I removed all the ring gear bolts. (16-20) they are all loc tited and tourqued to 100 lbs.
Ring gear comes off, spider and side gears come out. Locker drops in. Ring gear goes back on, tourqed to 100 lbs. Pig goes in, gasket, nuts, bolts and driveshaft hooked up. Filled with diff fluid then bed.
The next morning was the "test".
The manual says to jack up the rear, turn one wheel and the other wheel should go in the opposite direction.(just like an open diff). I turn a wheel and the other wheel goes in the same direction. NOT GOOD. I turn the other wheel and the opposite wheel forward and the other wheel still goes in the same direction. REALLY NOT GOOD!!!
So I start scouring the powertrax forums. Seems the tolerances are so tight when first installed that this occurs quite frequently.
solution? Take it off the jack stands, fire it up and powerbrake brake it. SUCCESS!!!
Both tires layin strips of rubber and the garage starts filling up with smoke. And me with a grin from ear to ear!!!! Redneck all bolts and off to get the brakes bled.

My buddy that was several yrs older than me offered some moral support so that was about it. I did this by myself with little experiance. No one else showed up to help and they were the ones with the knowledge of putting them in.
The instructions are pretty basic. I had deliberated on having a 4x4 shop do the work.(clemson 4x4) but they wanted $250. If I turned the project over to them I would gain no experiance. Besides, I had friends that were knowledgable and they were coming to help. Lol. It took me roughly 8 hrs to do the instal myself with maybe an hour the next day to button everything up.

If I were going to do it again, i'm sure I could do it in 5 hrs if all bolts and nuts were hit with penatrant prior.
I would highly recomend these when doing an instal.
    Vice
    air compressor. A good one
    3/8 and 1/2 air ratchets.
    Lots of pb blaster penatrant.
Maybe even a propane torch for stubborn bolts.
Large drain pan for diff fluid.

I use royal purple diff fluid and engine oil.
If there's anything else I can help with. Just holler.

i had a locker in my old k5 and it was fine in the snow... just be gentle with the gas...

easier to accelerate and even when you get sideways on corners its very controllable because its predictable.

    Good articles!

"We recommend the Lock-Right for vehicles that are primarily driven in severe driving conditions or are used for recreational off-road. For vehicles that are driven daily or require more mainstream application, the Powertrax No-Slip Traction System offers a quieter and smoother performance."

Looks like the No Slip will be the route I take once money grows from trees!

Installed my Lockright today! Not to bad of an install. The Install instructions were BS. There were a few tools that were a must and i didnt have. I luckly did it at a shop where i rented a lift and had free tools so i was able to do it but i would have never been able to do it at my house.

Cool. Have you been been out to give it the break in? Powertrax was 100 miles, how much is the lockright.

Roland, I noticed this during the deep snow we had this weekend here in SC.
The fishtailing and breaking loose of the rear is VERY controllable. Nothing but a toolbox and a spare tire in the bed and it did a fantastic job keeping traction.

This thread is sweet. I was just looking into a No Slip. Once I have the money we will try and get her done. To any of the dudes that have a couple miles on them. How bad do they affect your gas mileage? I hate to bring it up but I cant forget my truck gets driven everyday. Interesting stuff.

I haven't had any weird tire wear. And the gas mileage is exactly the same.

I read through this whole thread but I still do not understand why you would want a No-Slip or a Lockright as oppose to one that you can control if it is locked or not from the inside of the cab whenever you want.

much cheaper and less complication. If you go with an ARB you have to also buy a compressor and the lines and fittings. Also you will more than likely need to have it professionally installed. the lockright/no slip is a lot cheaper and very simple.

That's a good point. So if price was not a factor, the ARB would be better?
