It’s been awhile and it’s Friday and I am just over the work week.
Want to get a rack for my truck. Is a cab mounted rack or canopy rack the way to go?
Wife mentioned the cab in case I get tired of the canopy at some point. Main purpose is hauling over sized items like box springs and stuff.
Thanks for helping my day go quicker.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
A cap/canopy should be built the requisite rails & cross bars and not added afterward. The disadvantage that I found with a rack on a fiberglass cap was that the weight imposed on the cap caused the paint on the transition from roof to side wall to crack and ultimately peel (after 15 years). That effect would likely be worse if the cap was not fabricated with a rack in mind. You should also investigate the load capacity of any rack installed. Bed side stiffeners are highly recommended if you're going to use the rack on a cap to carry stuff.
If you were to put a rack on the cab, you need to consider the front-to-rear spacing of the cross bars, and whether or not those cross bars are higher than the shark fin. Keep in mind that a box spring can be as long as 80". You won't want the front cantilever past the cross bar to be very excessive as it will catch wind spilling up off the windshield and will lift whatever you're carrying. Again, find out what the load capacity of the rack will be.
I typically used mine for the occasional need to transport a long ladder or full sheets of plywood or long lumber. I tried to be cautious about the weight I was putting on it. Don't ask how much those items weighed (or the rack capacity) because I just don't know. I just did it and assumed all was good.

Good info! the canopy dealer said the canopy could easily support around 400lbs static. The rack is rated 660lbs. A box spring is under a 100lbs. But agree that the wind is creating a lot more stress then the weight. That is a good point.

Thought has crossed my mind. Just seems overkill. But I also said I would never get a canopy or put a rack on the canopy so…

I said that once a long time ago.
Put one on my '06 TRD OR AC. Figured I'd take it off most of the time. Never did, and never looked back.
Wait - one exception - had to haul a sheet metal item that wouldn't fit thru the door & under the cap.

I love having the cap for sure.

Canopy rack so you don’t have to listen to the thing on your cab roof vibrate and whistle at highway speeds.

I have a hybrid of what you are after. A rhino pioneer rack on my canopy, and roof bars (the whisper quiet Rhino vortex bars) on my cab if I want to carry a canoe etc.

That is perfect! I have thought about that as well! Just considered going the opposite with the flat rack up front and the cross bars on the canopy. But it looks better how you have it. And the noise is a good point.

It’s a system that has worked well for me over the years. Truck has changed in many ways, but never regretted the roofbars and canopy platform. For me, the key is to get a model that isn’t too huge and doesn’t overhang the sides too much. That starts to look goofy.

I have a canoe roller on the back and some auxiliary area lighting on the canopy rack as well.
