I just did mine at 4000km which is roughly 2500mi for some peace of mind. From what I understand (and has been mentioned earlier) during the engine break-in period there are small bits of metal that begin to circulate in the oil. Figured it would be good to try to remove those bits sooner than later.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To be fair I don’t know this to be unequivocally true, but for the $65 it cost me it provides a bit of comfort, and I really don’t think it could hurt. I plan to keep my truck for a long time, so I figure I might as well do any little thing I can to ensure its longevity/health.

I do mine every 6 months or 5k, whichever comes first. I have my oil changes done at the dealership because its free for 2 years.

Yup this is the answer. They recommend 5k, but are cheap asses and won’t do 5000 even under toyotacare

The 2 years of free maintenance only includes a total of 2 oil changes, once you use those up its on your dime.

They don't recommend oil changes every 5k, those are recommended every 10k. They recommend tire rotations every 5k, so yes, they recommend "service" every 5k but not an oil change every time. It follows the maintenance schedule. If you want your oil changed more often it's your dime.

I have always heard about changing your oil sooner the first time due to metal shavings, not sure if it's really necessary. But ever since full synthetic oil, manufacturers have recommended oil changes at 10k. Seems forever when you're old enough to remember it had to be changed every 3k. But that's why Toyota doesn't change it at your 5k service.

I did my first at 5k and every 5k after as its just something I prefer to do. It costs me one extra oil change a year and is cheap insurance.

I did my first at 4500.
I have a habit of checking mine every 2500-ish. Just color check, level check, checking air filters since I’m there. Only takes a few minutes. For me, if it looks really dark, I change it. Could be 7,500 could be 9000. Could be less and I could have driven 7000 miles in a year and decide to change it anyway.

Does Toyota care end at 20,000 if your truck is under 2 years old or if you drive 30,000 miles in 2 years do you get 3 oil changes?

Best to opt for the full engine flush too when Mr. Quikie Lube attendant shows you how dirty your dipstick looks.

You are right. After researching I guess they say 7500-10000.

Probably whichever comes first. My service guy said to skip the 15k (since I was at 16k) and just do the 20k since my Toyota care was expiring in a few months. The 20k covered more stuff.

It takes me around 4.5 years to reach 10,000 miles (2007 with 32,500 miles) There's no way I'd wait that long to change the oil. Hell, I wouldn't even do mine every 5,000. I change mine every 1,000 miles (which comes out to about 2 oil changes a year.) Even at that low of mileage the oil (mobile one) looks pretty dark (short trips). It's probably overkill but I enjoy doing the oil changes and it couldn't be any easier on these trucks!

Manual clearly states miles or age, in your case that is 12 months.

For some , it depends on how long you plan on keeping the truck , and whether or not you care about the next guy( it may be a son or daughter or grandchild ). Following Toyota's schedule will assure there will be no problem reaching 60K and beyond . The only one who cares how far beyond after that milestone is the owner . Toyota is meeting goals set by themselves and the EPA/CAFE. You should set goals on how long you want the truck to last for how you drive by removing possible longevity issues . If you plan on keeping it for a longgggg time , pick the low fruit items for maintenance such as oil/fluid changes , air filter changes ,use top tier fuel and take care of the body and frame from rust and corrosion . IMO ,this may be the difference between 10 yrs or 25+ years of service .
Most of all enjoy the truck !

The oldest turd gen is basically 5 years old. That’s nothing as far as long term reliability goes. 5-10 years from now it would be interesting to compare the guy that did the 10k changes with the one that did the 5k in a 2016 model with 200-300k miles.

Toyota manual says oil change every 10,000 miles, but then list exceptions which cover probably 75% of us. If you fall into those categories, then Toyota recommends 5,000 mile intervals... Even though their "free" maintenance won't cover that!
