Which States Use Dual Catalytic Converters???

I understand that some of the first gens have while some others do not have a dual cat set up, i dont know whether my truck has dual cats or not. Its from PA. I've gathered that theres cali and all other 49 states have a different set up, i'm just not sure which is which.

 

i have a 2001 from california and it does have what appears to be 2 cats. my CEL is on throwing P0420, indicating that i may need "a" new cat (i have no idea which one needs replacing). but as far as i know, california tacos have 2 cats. other states, not so sure...

 

my truck is throwing the P0420 code, comes up as bank one cat inefficiency (pass. side closest to motor)

i have a 2nd gen though, just thought this may help

 

thanks for that info. actually that was a sneaking suspicion i had. well, in the morning when there is some light, i will go check out the area and see how difficult it will be to do the necessary work

 

fwiw, my '02 is not a cali truck and it has 2 cats.

 

well, mine is now in the shop being inspected for which cat is faulty (if either). if i need a new cat, i am definitely buying/installing it myself.

*EDIT*: just heard back from the shop, and my rear ["post"] cat is dead. time to order a new part and do the labor myself. judging by what the mechanic said, looks like all 01-04 tacos have Pre- and Post Catalytic Converters. so TacomaGus, i guess yours probably has 2 cats. you can look underneath and see for yourself- just follow the exhaust from the muffler toward the engine, and you should see 2 cats, one under the rear passenger side and one just under the front of the passenger-side floor

 

woke up this morning and started my 2001 taco and it sounded like a John Deer tractor, someone sawed the #2 cat off Replacement cost 882 dollars plus repairs will cost about 1200 dollars. Apparently the cats are being sold for scrap metal for about 100 bucks! Nice huh!

 

wow dude that sucks. And yes i found that i do have dual cats, luckily i still have both of mine. Won't insurance cover that?

 

check ebay and local auto pick-a-part yards. you could literally save $1000

 

I bought the cat from Toyota along with the O2 sensor but because the pipes were cut off I have to buy the entire exhaust system as the flanges are missing from the engine and to the tail pipe. Going to be expensive for sure and yes the insurance will cover it I hope as we are still trying to settle with them.

 

oh yikes, i didnt realize it was that bad. best of luck with the insurance company!
