My brother's dogs that are at my place because his wife doesn't like anything that's more adorable than her living with them.

Boy that's a lot of training, congratulations. We have a short haired that finally walks well and has great recall.

What’s the most important command any dog can learn? It is the key to all training. When you learn it your dog will learn better, faster.

and when I look back it really wasn’t that much training. Because if you’re consistent, from the start on the dog the pup you can literally teach the dog how to train themselves.

every single walk or run I went on with the dog was a training session.

The dog didn’t know it, he was just doing what was asked of him, and all he’s ever known.

it’s never about the dog it’s always the owner.

The most important command IMO is recall. If you can not call your dog back in the heat of the moment that dog is most likely not ready to be off leash.

If for some reason my dog does not come when he is supposed to I also have him trained to come to a gun. Had to use that once when he was about 2yrs old. Walking in woods off leash, we jumped deer, he took off after deer ( heat of the moment I was talking about) when I hollered OUT. NO OUT. At that point he was well out of sight and I pulled my pistol and shot into the ground. He come running back with the quickness. He got worked hard after that. If you don’t stay on top of working your dog they will most definitely get slack.

    That is one handsome dog.

I haven’t done any schutzen training and I think you have to have a slightly different approach for that type of training. The dog can’t believe that a human can overpower it.

but the most important command is the release command. It isn’t until the dog knows the release command and knows to wait to be released from whatever command the dog is under that you have full control the dog. The dog learns to wait for your permission, to move onto the next thing.

as far as your dog not coming back, on Recall. The dog has to learn, that it will be more pleasurable for it to come when you call than to have you run it down. And you literally have to run the dog down. If you know the dog heard you, then you have to enforce the command, or the dog learns that at a distance all you are is a holler , and they can ignore your command. And then you have to drag the dog back to the very spot where you called it from. And when you drag it back it Has to be uncomfortable for the dog.

because chasing that deer was more pleasurable to the dog then it was to listen to your command. And it always Hass to be more pleasurable for the dog to listen to your command no matter what the temptation.

It's been a good while since I've first introduced Roxy girl to all of you. Quick refresher, I got her when she was 7 weeks old and she was not very well taken care of by previous owners. If you'd like, I posted way back about that if you wanna read that story lol. We'll anyways here she is now at just over 2 years old. A completely changed dog. She's become an amazing pup!

Took this character (blue harness) to northern Michigan for some trail hiking. He hates walking in our neighborhood, but can’t get enough of the trails. His cousin (red harness) hates both, but tolerates it all as long as he’s with me.
