Yes, I would like to buy outside my 401K. Not looking to buy individual stocks. Mutual funds only. "Buy and hold"
Just looking for the best way to do it. Broker? Robinhood? Other?

 

Open a traditional IRA first. This will allow a maximum contribution of $6000 per year and the returns will be tax free until you reach retirement. If you opened a regular investment account in 2010 like this idiot you would be paying YEARS Of taxes on your dividends....That works out to thousands of dollars of lost gains over 10 years if you're getting a 10% return via dividends you're going to owe about 1/3 of that 10% in taxes each year.
Now you won't get a tax reduction when you file your taxes from the IRA contribution because you've already maxed out your 401K (they don't let you double dip) BUT again, once the money is in the IRA the returns are not taxed.

Just be sure you won't need that $$$ anytime soon because if you do you get all sorts of penalties.

Now once you've put your $6000 in your IRA if you still have fun money to play with THEN open a standard investment (what we call a fun account).

This is where you'll get taxed to all hell for every little $$ you make.

that being said, I would recommend getting a play account from one of the big free guys not named RobinHood, and start playing a little, it really can’t hurt.

hell, this idiot right here ran into a $3,000 payday from being lucky and having a few chips on amc when it blew up.

ETA: @TreeFortRichard is one of the guys that knows a lot more than me, and he’s given out some great advice to me personally so I listen to him about stuff.

 

Which company holds your 401K if it's fidelity it's easy to just add a trading account to your existing account.
I would go fidelity first if you're not looking to do anything fancy.
I would not touch robinhood on principle...
For options trading I like TD ameritrades Think or Swim platform.

 

@TRD-ED There is a think or swim practice account you can set up. You put a fake amount of money in the account and practice trading to see what happens...Like a digital poker game when your have chips for free and don't have to pay real $$...
