Thats to much screen and additional things to distract you while driving , not to mention the G90 is QRP.

Sure, if you are trying to dig out someone in the noise and fiddling with filters, gain, and DSP it would be hazardous. Don't do that.

After I posted that I read several reviews on the radio and it doesn't appear to be stellar anyway.

My buddy has one, he seems to like it. He does more listening than anything so transmitting isn't a big deal. But when he has, the audio was really tight and nasally. Im not a fan of most Chicomm type radios. Always have to many quirks, copy someone elses design but either screw something up or miss major features. He does not use mobile though.

As for using filters, adjusting gain and dsp, thats typically most of the time, especially when you operate in a high QRM areas. You almost need to be an octopus to manipulate the controls. Even worse when its a menu driven rig..

Sorted out APRS on my Kenwood TM-D710 this weekend. Haven't used it in a field situation yet, but there are more than enough repeaters and gateways around me here to get a good track and confirm it's working via aprs.fi. Next step for me will be integrating with an iPad and hopefully seeing how well it does outside of repeater & GW range with others on a trip. KN6QGW-9.

Unless you plan on feeding its data directly into the ipad somehow then uploading to the internet , without being in range of a digipeter or an Igate, its not going to track to aprs.fi or any of the other third party servers.

Although I haven't done this myself, I have seen guys bluetooth an FTM-400 to an tablet and use aprs droid to give live position on a map. I don't believe this will upload to aprs.fi, but if you receive other packets I think they will show on your tablet.

That seems kinda redundant as aprs droid would be using the built in gps in the tablet and plotting that way. Unless you have the map downloaded into memory , it’s not going to refresh the map for your current position without internet. you might as well just use a regular GPS instead of going around your ass to get to your elbow.

I prefer the map view on a tablet over distance and heading provided by an FTM-400 OR TM-D710G. I connected my 710G to a mobilinkd and to APRSDroid to accomplish this. If you have a dedicated tablet for APRS, it's a fine method. You can download offline maps and see other people on the map that you decode.

Yeah -- aprs.fi was just a way to confirm it was actually successfully beaconing through local GWs. Now I'm looking to sort out getting the received data from other APRS capable ham off-roaders into an iPad well outside of any internet resources using the radio's data connection. Seems useful for some of the stuff friends and I do together way the heck away from cellular or internet connectivity. It would be nice to be able to keep an eye on each other.

I'm waiting till I can copy Morse code (halfway through the Koch list, 15wpm true timing), then I'm going to buy myself some CW gear, and maybe a Elecraft KX2....

I hear they are great radios; lots of people are still holding on to theirs that they have been using for many years. My VHF/UHF mobile radios are all Kenwoods but I wouldn't hesitate to try a Yaesu. I'm happy with my Yaesu HF radios.

Used the DJI Phantom 4P to get a local Amateur HF wire into a tree... Forgot to press the REC, just flew up over tree, dropped the tennis ball. Pulled paracord up and over. Attached antenna wire, raised. Now he's back on HF... Love my DJI P4P
