Not a lot, they make earrings or pendants out of them. The older elk are better cuz the are more color to them. But like a mini trophy. I got the ones i harvested in a ziploc.

Game ranch probably, in tx non native/exotics arent under same rules as native animals. So basically up to the land owner. From what i remember

Gentlemen that is quite easy to answer. We've had a few different exotics show up on my lease lately. I've used Google lens and some other websites to try and identify what's been showing up on the game cameras. So we've had 2 different animals that are quite large but just a little bit different. I've tried to confirm with other hunters exactly what they were.

So the rule in Texas is, if the animal is not native to Texas then there is no open season to harvest the animal. Since Elk and Red Stag are not native to Texas I am legally able to harvest that animal anytime.

If you're standing on the easternmost line, it's all west Texas.

Just weird that elk are considered “exotic” to me. You’re well within the regs so enjoy that meat!

I looked into this quite extensively before trying to harvest this animal. To me losing my truck, guns, fines and possibly facing jail time for poaching just isn't worth the risk. I do appreciate your thoughts and input. :fistbump:

Padre - yep, rocky mountain are your only option. Historically, like 1800s a different subspecies was present, it was believed to be the Merriam's elk, but that subspecies went extint a long time ago, everywhere, not just in Texas. The RM elk are believed to have come from New Mexico, naturally expanding their range into Texas (i.e., not bred and released). Seems wierd to me that they are not considered native given they moved into Texas on their own. Species ranges are constantly expanding and retracting. A nonnative is a species that was brought there on purpose or incidentally through anthropogenic ways. Shit, we have federally designated critical habitat for steelhead out here in a creek that historically didn't connect to the bay (humans extended it to drain farmlands). Anyways, seems wierd to me to call them nonnative (not saying hunting them is wrong, I'd shoot and eat one if legal). They use to be game species until the 90s? in texas (i.e., hunting regs applied), but around then it was decided they pose a threat to big horn sheep and mule deer? So, they switched it up to no limits - they are bad AND nonnative.

Thats what i got from a quick look into it. Guarantee i am missing something.

    Real cool you got one.
