Reminds me of a story I heard from one of friends.

2 recent grads from the High School tech program show up to put in a application .

They state we never do any prep work or grinding just weld. You can guess where those applications were filed .

This might have been 20 years ago.

Welded with gas for the first time this weekend and damn its smooth. Even flux is a lot smoother than on the titanium. The Migmax is really nice machine and i couldn't be happier. Just need to diel in settings a little more.

I am needing to weld some cam tab gussets on, and have a flux core welder and can lay pretty good beads with it. Will it be enough for the gussets?

If you're comfortable with the machine, I'd say its fine.

I think flux core catches a lot of unnecessary crap. Yes its a messy process and usually on lower end 120v welders, but once you get the hang of it, it works well. I welded my panhard correction bracket (4runner thing) on with a HF titanium Flux 125, and it is solid on there. I check it every once in a while, and no signs of failure

It will work very well. Do some practice on similar shaped and size metals to get comfortable.

Remember, flux core throws lots of hot, BB's and Toyota paint burns very well! Have a second person there with wet towels and fire extinguisher for safety.

Not to mention it’s near CV axles and tie rod boots which melt easily with BB’s. He better make sure those are protected really well.

cam tabs don’t have a ton of load on them. You’ll be fine with the flux core.

I met a guy that had pelfreybilt weld a set of spindle gussets for him without removing the spindles from his truck. He told me pelfrey told him it was a bad idea, but he decided not to listen to their warnings, each of his cv boots had dozens of pin holes in them.

I used a cut up old leather welding sleeve to wrap the axles when doing cam tabs. You can see it in the background of this pic. I usually zip tie it or tape it place to make sure nothing is exposed.

A good Fire watcher is always a good idea !

It comes down to if you feel comfortable that you can do the job.

Flux core welder can include all the wire feed machines out there.

    protect from splatter damage .

Might be a good idea to practice some welding out of position.

Be comfortable and be able to see you should be fine.

Exactly - getting a good light source and doing a bit of practice out of position helps.

In the spirit of "if you can't tie a knot, tie a lot," how about "if you can't weld a bead, worms and boogers are all you need"

Lol, sometimes the beat to fit is needed.

When I made the belt grinder i got in a rush and warped the frame with poor heat management. Soo. Shop press to the rescue. 20t press and once I had back to a reasonable squareness I put a couple good tafks while under pressure and let it all cool.and then removed.

Banged out a set of sliders today and made eight 3 way coupler corners for my boss. I have to make 32 more next week

Thanks to the input of you guys and others I’m working on my technique, trying to keep the e’s tighter and flatter, this was on 1/8” and man I have already come to dislike welding the thinner stuff. Soooo excited to pick up the gun again & start actually working on parts for the truck.

If you guys are welding a 1/4” piece to your frame , which is more like 1/8, do you use the 1/8” settings bumped up a tad and hold the puddle on the thicker metal longer? Or use 1/4” settings and be quick on the thinner portion? I don’t want to blow through my frame

Also working on figuring out when my settings are too hot vs the workpiece just being too hot. There is so much finesse and art to this - it’s such a good time. Thanks again to all yous for the input. Such a fun hobby. Oh and I welded in shorts yesterday already so that’s probably something you guys would be disappointed / proud of.

You generally want your setting to be closer to the thicker material so you’d get good penetration. You’d also want to develop a rhythm to laying the bead down where you hold the bead on the thicker material longer and drag the puddle into the thinner stuff before you bounce back. I usually count in my head: 2-1-2-1-2-1. Two seconds on the thicker material and one second on the thinner. Almost like you’re bouncing the bead. That should get you close to where you want but you’ll play with the technique for your scenario.
