Yes. Vinton County's full of "unmaintained roads". Start with Lady Run Road and go from there!

Meredith and I are taking the truck to Red River Gorge and then the Monongahela NF this week for some camping and exploring. I got a Softopper off CL which will be handy. Not sure yet if we're sleeping in it or using a tent... Game time decision. Looking forward to some Miguel's pizza on night one and some Ale8!!!!

    Sounds like a blast!

If you're looking for a bed rack, there's a guy on Central Ohio Tacomas selling one that fits over the Softopper. $1000, but you might be able to talk him down. I don't think it matters that you have the long bed.

I'll be down in Hocking hills Oct 1-4th. Definitely heading out to explore in the truck one of those days.

I hope those roads aren't in as bad of shape as the satalite view makes them look. I assume that as long as the weather isn't too wet it should be fine though.

They can get pretty rough. Had a Jeep buddy drop his Jeep on its side in one of the trails. They get a bit rutted and if you loose focus… well.

There's a central ohio tacomas Facebook group heading to Southington on 03 October. I may be heading that way too, but Hocking Hills is a lot closer.

Facebook groups and chatter on here seem to be the most prevalent. I'm connected on a few Facebook groups and didn't know about this meetup until it was mentioned on here though.

Nice trip (and write up man). I've done most of the GA Traverse and parts of the Smokey Mtn 1000. I might do this one next if the pull to go off-roading back out west isn't greater.

A couple of things if you don't mind.

There is another ferry across the Ohio. It's on 52 east and drops you off at Augusta Ky. This is somewhat close to my place and I took it across as a cool start to heading south to do the GA Traverse last year.

Also, I don't know about where you live but the Krogers around here carry Ale8 now. Cans, bottles, even in cherry flavor. It kinda takes the fun out of it being we started drinking the stuff back in the 80s when the Gorge area was the only place you get it (that I was aware of).

    Again, nice adventuring!

Thanks. Yeah I know there's more than one ferry across the river but I guess there's only that one closest to Cincinnati. The Augusta ferry is 50 mi East coming out of Higginsport. I've done that a bunch of times on the motorcycle. And there's another ferry even further east between Fly and Sisterville West Virginia. As far as I know the only two ferries between Ohio and Kentucky are
    Anderson and Augusta.

    That's an awesome trip!

    Questions:
    1. I can tell you're not running stock suspension, but how much lift and what size tires are you running? They look like 32's, but it doesn't look like you have much more lift than stock. I think the 3rd gens allow for bigger tires than the 2nd gens without modification, but I don't know.
    2. Did you need to take spare fuel and how much?
    3. Did the 'features' that you turned around from have a B-line or did you have to find your own way around?
    4. That sausage meal looked delicious! Did you pick up a portable fridge or electric cooler or just a good old cooler and ice packs?

I'm thinking of doing this trip with my brothers next spring or summer. Just getting some insight for someone whose done it in a vehicle similar to mine.

I'm hanging out for answers to all these questions too. My wife and I are heading to Red River Gorge weekend of 10-09/10-10 and looking to do some trails like these. Last time we were there, we went to Hollerwood Offroad Park and did the green trails. With 0 lift and 31" tires, there were some spots I had to turnaround. Now I have a 3" lift and 32" tires and am wondering if that would be enough to clear some of those obstacles. Looks like you had a blast and found a good trail for sight-seeing AND having some technical challenges!

    What up!!??

    1) 1" lift front with Eibach struts on the factory coils, and Eibach shocks on the factory leafs rear with a 1/2" spacer between leaf and axle on both sides. Tires are 265/75 16 so just barely a 32" Falken Wildpeak.

    2) I had a 2 gallon can but I use that for cheating firestarting and didn't need it for automotive use. There's gas stations all around there.

    3) No B line. You go through or go back. Well, mostly. There were a few alternate spots but where I turned around on Pumpkin Hollow and the unnamed abandoned road extending off Furnace-Pilot Rd there was no go around.

    4) No fridge. We have a Grizzly cooler (similar to a Yeti, I guess) 65q. It is actually bigger than we need for a 2.5 day trip but it's what we got.

Pro tip that was a game changer for us that we got recently and just used for maybe the third time on this trip: Lifetime brand camping table. Get one. https://www.lifetime.com/lifetime-280312-4-foot-tailgating-folding-table-with-grill-rack

Crazyaussie, bigger tires and lift would have cleared the rock ledges on Pumpkin Hollow but honestly without a mud-built machine and a crew of dudes to help you ain't no way I would do the mud bogs section. Yeah, it's fun as hell until it ain't, then you are 300 miles from home in the middle of a guy's land who hates the fact that a court order forced him to let people through. You know he ain't coming out in his tractor for ya!

    Go here: https://www.sfwda.org/dbbb

and spend $12 for the map which overlays on the free Avenza maps app so you can run it on your cell even without signal. I never used Avenza before this and it was real easy to use and the route was easy to follow.

I will warn you both the route is super tight. Like, you could not get a Raptor through it. Some of the creek roads were so eroded down into the ground that you could stand on the bank and then step off onto the roof of the truck. Even the sections in the woods you will get branches scraping your truck. I do not care about those things but some guys do.

That section gets pretty nasty when it's wet. A good call on your part to turn around.

That's awesome! Thanks for the tips (just the tip). Sounds like I need to do some more planning and shopping!
