It’s the old school key type No fob. No flip. Just a stubborn piece of metal that, when you’re aren’t driving, and sitting, it’s jabbing your ass cheek.

Quick question MT peeps. What do you all do when you are stopped, in neutral, and go to put it in first and surprise! it won't let you in the gate? Am i doing something wrong that this sometimes happens? I learned MT on my high school and college Accord 20 years ago, and finally back in one,,,so I am no expert, but i figure 20,000k in, maybe should try to improve here and there :). Thx!

Just reclutch and it ought to spin the gearing just enough to let you back into 1st. Worst case, shift to 2nd and then back to 1st.

It is not a gate, but that the noses of the splines are just perfectly aligned the wrong way. :D

The fastest thing for me is usually to slap it into 2nd and then go back to 1st.

The best perma fix that I have seen is an MT fluid swap. Going to Redline MT-90 or the highly rated Motocraft stuff (never used it) is a great fix with other good benefits. Once shifts get notchy or I start to get cockblocked out of 1st, usually after about 40k, it is an indicator that it is time for another swap.

I changed the factory fluid at 7,000mi because of this issue and a UOA indicated some negatives about the Toyota fluid. See @Omar RVA 's thread for that info.

That's been a rare occurrence for me, but when it has happened pulling the shifter to 2nd then pushing back to 1st has always worked.

This happened with the factory fill, once at a stop light, going into 2nd then 1 BARELY worked. After a couple times I was getting cranky. About the same time I swapped all the fluids, went with Amsoil MTG in the MT. Has not done it in 12K+ miles since.

When did you end up changing the fluid? I'm a few hundred miles shy of 15k currently, but so far so good.

It is normal. If I pull into a parking spot and shut down the truck it is a 50/50 whether the shifter will go into a gear or not.

In a parking lot, esp when waiting on the fam, I will row the gears until all seven are lined up. o_O

I might be making engine sounds as I do it.

I usually pick my nose, but maybe I'll try that next time I'm waiting

For both, as long as no one is looking, it's fair game.

I have an auto, I no longer trust my seventy-seven year old left knee actually work a hundred times in a day. I hope my right one holds up.

Better to pick one's nose then to pick one's a$$.....

Seriously, like others have said, when this happens to me, I go to 2nd gear then right back into 1st. Also, wait for the engine rpm's to slow down. :burnrubber:

I did it because I hated how the automatic transmission searched for gears when I did the test drive.

and everything I could read and find out said that the manual transmission was pretty much bulletproof.

and now when I want to pass someone on a 2 Lane Highway that’s driving 52 miles an hour in a 55, I just shift into third gear hammer on the gas and I accelerate all the way to 85 miles an hour In a heartbeat.

The whole downshifting thing has been eye opening for me. I came from a bunch of manuals with Heeps of torque. The other day I dropped into 4th and sped past a bunch of cars on “the grade”. Including a 3rd gen taco. I’m just hoping that guy was like what? How?

I think it has been proven in many instances that the crims struggle with ATs also. :cookiemonster:
