I’ve been looking into getting into buying a drone. Anyone else have a drone?

Yeah, I've wanted to venture down that rabbit hole for some time myself, I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger as every one I want seems to be just over the threshold of what my wife would consider a 'reasonable expenditure'.

They sure seem to make a lot more affordable entry-level units now than they ever did; we got my father-in-law a cheaper one not too long ago and the thing was a blast to play with. I could really see their useful-ness if you do anything with social media/youtube; opens up a whole new world of perspectives/possibilities.

After some research I’ve been looking at the DVI Mini. It’s small enough you don’t need a Drone license.

The DJI Mavic Mini? Yeah, those things seem pretty awesome overall, especially for the price. Those caught my eye as well.

I have a MINI 2. It's pretty decent. Camera lacks a bit for sunset photography but I enjoy mine.

I believe you only need a license if you're using the drone for anything commercial. Even YouTubing if you have ads would be considered commercial.

Drones over a certain size need to be registered, easy peasy :)

I have a DJI Mavic Pro, it's pretty awesome and can do everything I need. That DJI Mini looks very good though...

I have a DJI Mini and I really like it. Compared to others it’s relatively inexpensive and I like that I can fit it in my glovebox.

I have a DJI Mavic 2. First, it's mind blowing (to me anyway) how a consumer level drone can be so stable and advanced. (unrelated, but I can only imagine what the military has come up with and makes me think many UFO sightings could for sure be some advanced drone tech). Back on topic. I say go for it! However, a point of consideration. I was into photography for many years prior to getting a drone. I've seen a few people get really frustrated with a DJI drone because they aren't really into photo/video production or editing. Not that you need to be, but I'd consider what do you really want? Do you want to just fly a drone around? Are you into photography already? Are you really going to get into flying it, setting up shots, editing them? are are you planning to throw a drone up once in a while and expect a feature film production at the end of it(which won't happen)? If you want to just fly a drone around, by a cheaper one and don't worry about the camera. Basically, just try to level set on what your expectations are and buy a drone that can meet them.

I’d like to see a rule change that allows downing of drones that invade your privacy.

Although a recent video of a firefighter taking one out with a hose stream at a fire might provide a way forward.

Per definition of "reasonable right to privacy", it's going to be pretty subjective. I would find it more likely you would catch a charge for property damage on the drone than the other guy will be for flying it. Gonna be your word against theirs, and 1 broken drone. However, water would be the only way I would ever attempt such a thing. Have talked to more people than I care to have with the stance "if it's on my property I'll shoot it with my shotgun".... yeah smart idea bud... So, maybe you just have a malfunctioning sprinkler that has several hundred PSI of pressure behind it, so you're not on any video.

I literally just ventured down this path myself, and I got the Ruko F11 pro 4k. It was about $220 on Amazon. A great beginner setup, I regret not spending the couple extra bucks, on the Ruko F11 pro gim. 2 axis Gimbal camera and image stabilization, for under $400. I got the one just under it and it doesn't have the gimbal and a bit shittier camera

Wow, just saw this section. I'm embarrassed that I have had a full DJI Mavic Mini, plus accessories in the box for at least 8 months. Bought the package and haven't had the time to open it up and get in to it. Gotta get to it!!

I'll chime in here, I've had a Mavic Air for a few years and am super pleased with it. I haven't owned any other consumer drones, but several years ago I worked at a company where we built somewhat larger quadcopters for R&D purposes. I was amazed at how easy it was to design and build quadcopters back then, but wow, today's consumer tech is a whole new level of awesome and foolproof!

My friend recently got the Mavic Air 2 and it is much, much better, primarily because of how much quieter it is. It has some other better specs too, but if I were to upgrade today, it would be 99% because of how much quieter it is. Drones are obnoxious and detract from other's enjoyment of the outdoors. Depending on the noise environment, I won't consider sending mine up within 200-300 feet of other people, unless maybe it's just one or two people, then maybe I'll try asking them if they'd mind...

Of course these days, more and more often, especially at the popular "overlanding" destinations, everybody else is already flying their own drone around anyway.

Anyway, I mostly use mine to make crappy video montages of my camping trips. Here's the latest one:

I've been flying FPV freestyle since spring of this year and it's been an absolute blast. These are utilizing DJI video transmitters with their HD goggles for a 720p or 1080p depending on which VTX. Being able to throw yourself over a tree line and lean on the throttle rushing toward the ground and slipping through a gap a few feet off the ground is a hoot. Takes a bit of time to get used to the sticks but you can do a lot of that in a sim to keep from crashing the real quad although they're pretty damn resilient.
