I notice that the point at which my clutch appears to engage on my 5 speed Tacoma is much higher than that of my other vehicle's clutch. I would estimate that the engagement point is approximately in the upper 1/4 (in other words, near the top of the pedal travel or fully released position).
Where is the approximate engagment point on your Tacoma clutches?

Take a look at the clutch pedal TSB. At the end, pgs 9-10, it describes how to adjust the clutch pedal height, freeplay, and release point.

Might need to bleed the clutch or adjust the pushrod.

Thanks for your prompt response. Are you saying that it should not engage so high? I only have about 7,000 miles on the truck and if I recall correctly, it has been engaging about same point since new.

Personally, I would think that it should not engage until closer to the floor. The rule of thumb I have been told in the past is that the further out it engages, the more the clutch is worn. That is assuming the release point was closer to the floor in the beginning. Since it has been doing it since new, that may not be the case. It may just be that an adjustment should be made to make it engage closer to the floor.

The TSB that I linked before is for the 05-06 models. I'm not sure if the 08's are the same. Just for clarification, I linked it so you could use the information about the clutch pedal height, freeplay, and release point as a reference since the TSB doesn't apply to your truck. I'd check the release point procedure on pg 10 and see what it measures. Then you can use that info as ammo if you take it in to get it adjusted. ;)

I do know that mine doesn't engage as far out as you are describing though. And for that reason, I have not tried the procedure on pg 10. But if I was concerned about it, I would.

I think its the opposite my tacoma has a newer clutch and engages when pushing it down less and my 87 pickup that needs a new clutch engages closer to the floor. I could be wrong.

Looks like kmok's is somewhat consistent with the engagement point on mine. Afd23a has me a little concerned. Maybe I need to clarify. When I say "upper 1/4", I am not referring to upper 1/4 inch; I am referring to approximately the upper 25% (1/4) of the pedal travel.
Also, afd23a, thanks for your input; however, the TSB does not appear to apply (release point vs. engagement point). Also, the procedure on page 10 should be left for the dealer mechanic to perform safely and properly (TSBs are directed to the dealer mechanic).

Please tell me about the engagment point on your 2nd generation Tacoma's.

Yes, clutch engagement is later in the travel with our trucks. The piston rod would need to be adjusted to change that. I havent touched mine.

One thing some us have done to help at least reduce the long travel is remove the last 3/4" of wasted freeplay (at least on my 05'). There was an instructional posted years ago on TN, but its gone. Basically getting to the adjustment for the freeplay (as seen in the TSB afd23a posted) is a pain, so make your own 7mm spacer to replace the Clutch pedal No.1 Cushion (its about 3mm) thus removing all that wasted travel, but not engaging the clutch.

FYI, I had my clutch master cylinder replaced a couple days ago b/c it was leaking. The clutch engage point changed with the new cylinder. It moved farther away from the floor to the same area of travel you are asking about. Approximately the last 1/4 of the pedal travel. Went back this morning and they adjusted it to be closer to the floor. Apparently, this is a PIA to adjust. Now it's around the halfway point of the pedal travel and I'm ok with that. I would've liked it better in the first 1/4 of the pedal travel, but oh well. Bottom line, the dealer can do it, but the tech probably won't enjoy it.

Update: Recently, a mechanic from the Toyota Dealer test drove my Tacoma and said the higher clutch engagment point is normal.

Have the same setup as yourself, but the pre-runner. I found this to be very odd when i bought the truck but have become used to it as time went on. Shifts fine, and there doesn't seem to be a problem what-so-ever with th e release point other than it being different then most vehicles.

Just got a new clutch installed(my URD Stage 2 went on me last week). My clutch engages, I'm guessing the last two inches in the pedal's distance? What distance should it start engaging, and how high should the pedal be of the floor? Thanks.
