Transmission fluid mistake

Hi, I made a mistake doing an all change today. Been working on mycars for 20 years, first time changing my oil on my Tacoma and I managed to drain the transmission fluid instead of oil. Still kicking myself 12 hours later. I measured 3.5 quarts came out. can I just replace 3.5 back in or do I need to go through the temperature checks running at both hot and cold as I've seen in a few YouTube videos? Thank you

 

Do it correctly as the service manual states. How do you know it was actually full before? Dont mess around

 

Just put 3.5qts new trans fluid back in

 

Don't you just fill until it dribbles out of the fill port? Assuming its on a level floor

 

Put it back in what you drained+some more(just a tip) . I heard 21's cannot be put in temp mode by jumping pins.
May need to look for a help on a side or a dealer

 

The fluids are always the proper level from the factory !

 

can't you just drive the truck until the transmission reaches the correct temperature? btw, what is the correct temperature?

 

Fill at fill hole...
Needs a dribble at the overflow hole when ATF temp is 95-113 degrees. There is also a drain hole...

The hardest part, most of the uninitiated seem to complain about, is getting it into temp check mode. It's really not that difficult. I liken it to entering a cheat code on an old NES.

There's only about a 5-10 minute window when the truck is at idle.

 

Just put back the 3.5 qts.
If it ran fine before, you should be fine.
I think you are probably overthinking this.

Or, if it makes you feel better.
Have a dealership check it. That way you know it’s right.

 

the rumor is that 21s don't have an ability to jump pins on OBD connector, like previous years. So, you need a techstream or at least some sort of obd2 monitoring app to get a temperature.
I'm sure a grill thermometer could work, but the issue is with maintaining a proper rpms for temp checking

Assuming the fill level was correct from the factory, adding the same exact amount as what came out should be good to go!

 

For sure. Nothing is going to break. Just need to adjust a level..
Need 24 mm socket with 6 conners (don't use 12) to get the fill plug out

 

I thought 'they' figured that out...
Basically the same procedure, sans the jumper.

I did the same thing as you did several years ago on my 2006. I have heard of others doing this too. I didn't mess around though and just towed it to the dealer (was a free tow).
