Most every town large enough to have some industry has an electric motor shop, inquire at an electrical/plumbing supply house (look for HVAC contractors vans out front), they should be able to direct you.

Industrial motors are designed to be disassembled and repaired including replacing the windings if required. Most of the time a standard motor below 5 horsepower will be replaced rather than rewound as the time and material cost get too close to the value of the motor.

To give you a general idea of the cost, a light repair of a 5 horsepower, 240 volt, single phase air compressor motor - new bearings, clean up and test - was around $60 - 100 last time I had one done, perhaps $25 more if a capacitor tests bad. If the same motor truly burned up and needed to be rewound it would probably be replaced, the new one would be cheaper.

Most household appliances motors aren't designed for easy service and not cost effective to be repaired for the same reason.
That said it never hurts to ask them.

Be careful of the grills, they get brittle over the years. Nice that the entire unit is in nice condition.

One of the electrical engineers at work got a healthy zap from the part of the plug that runs into the switch, so I'm scrapping this thing...

So, it turns out that the only reason she blocked me is because she didn't like things I was posting on Facebook (things that would get you a 30-day vacation here on TW ;)) and felt overwhelmed; She spilled tomato sauce on her shirt when we went to the demolition derby a couple weeks ago, bought a new shirt at the demo derby, changed in the ladies room, and then left the stained shirt in my truck. I did not discover this until two days ago when I was cleaning out the truck; I called her home phone (she'd blocked my cell number, again over stuff I posted on Facebook she found to be obnoxious). I was thinking she'd gone off the deep end and I was gonna just mail her shirt to her; She called me yesterday evening and explained the real story. I returned her shirt to her, and when I went over there we reached a mutual agreement that we would just be friends...

She needs help, and I am trying to help her get it, but there is only so much I can do!

She has this 13-year old American Eskimo dog named Chelsea; The dog is deaf and just barks like crazy at anyone who comes into the house that doesn't live there, no matter how many times that person comes over...

She has actually gotten very aggressive when, purely out of reflex, I yelled at the dog to shut up. She also got very angry with me last night when I was there because I called her dog a dingus...

I call Porter a dingus all the time, and consider it a term of endearment!

It's one thing to think someone is insulting your dog and ask them not to, but this girl got pure rage in her eyes and raised her voice; This is the same way she reacted when I got irate with her for throwing a soda can out of my truck. I can't be in a relationship with a woman if I think she's gonna physically assault me over a little constructive criticism...

By the way, I told her that "Dingus" is a term of endearment, and her mom is normally overly protective of the dog sided with me, saying that it was in fact a term of endearment.

Okay, so I did this without even thinking...

I went to a cruise night at the Dairy Queen on Route 309 in Quakertown and brought my dog; Obviously, pets that aren't service animals aren't allowed in the DQ, so I left Porter in the truck and used my spare key to keep the A/C running while I went into DQ to get some ice cream. I then locked the truck with my primary key...

Funny thing; The key I used to start the truck is the same one that would unlock the doors but NOT start the truck last month!

You quit too easily. More interesting to learn why you get zapped and repair it.

(And even better to do your homework on the front end and not get zapped at all.)

    The fan is fixable...

It just seems like it might not be worth it; My opinion? With possible exception fo the switch, all of wiring and electrical stuff needs to be replaced. Essentially, all that would remain are the fan blades, the chassis, and again, possibly the switch. I am not scrapping it immediately; I am going up to Maine tomorrow for a five day vacation and I will decided what to when I get back home...

Also, I'm afraid that if I do something wrong I'll plug it and torch my house...

On another note, when I was touching the metal edge of the box while it was plugged it, I swear I felt a sensation; I thought I was imagining it, but after my coworker got zapped I don't thing I was!

So you have a project small enough to pick up and set on a table to work on, it can be taken apart with the most basic of tools and any part needed will be small and inexpensive. This sounds like a good opportunity to learn everything about how it works and what is wrong with it for very little money.

Electricity is a dangerous tool, just like a power saw -- you need to learn how it works and be respectful of it -- when you are armed with the knowledge and respect then it becomes a very useful tool just like the power saw.

I'm totally gonna tear it apart and do an autopsy - Also, for the record, I wasn't the one who got zapped - I'm gonna scrap the motor because it's shot; After thinking about it, trying to get it operational again could be fun. However, my only experience with electronics is the following...

    • Learning how to wire a thermostat in an HVAC night class I took...
    • Installing head units in my Tacoma and a friend's Subaru...

It isn't electronics it is electric in this case -- kind of like the difference between fuel injection and a carburetor.

I believe I smell an assumption when I hear "the motor is shot", how do you know? -- Did you do a continuity test? -- I didn't see a report of that.

Everything I have learned came the hard way, pretty much me and a bunch of books -- I provided for myself and family all these years with what I learned completely on my own.

Today it is so incredibly easy to learn if one desires, there is easily available manufacturer information, you tube and forums like TW, etc. -- there is so much information easily available and a network of people to ask your questions.

Oh, the perils of deciding to keep a vehicle until it dies or it is otherwise no longer economically feasible to do so...

The fan control knob in my truck has cracked and I have no idea how the hell it happened, but obviously I want to replace it before it totally falls apart...

One of my worries manifested itself last night when I could not get the center knob off during a "test pull", and I thought that maybe the knobs weren't supposed to come off; However, just now I was able to get it off...
