Whatever the dealer's version of a line cook spitting in your food is, I'm worried he'll do that if I keep pestering him. I was clearly not taught patience as a child...

He works for you. As long as he is selling a truck the moment it hits his lot. He's going to be rather happy.

I have never "Ordered" a vehicle. I see them on the sales lot. If I like what I see then I test drive. If I like what I test drive then I make an offer.

    Why would anybody do otherwise?

They're kinda hard to find on the sales lot right now.

I got notified that mine was in about noon.
By 4:00 when I got there to pick it up, the dealer had received 3 offers on it and when I pulled up there was another guy who had spent about 20 minutes walking around it when I walked up with the key (fob).

Dealerships molest new cars with horrible low quality products and snake oils, especially now since the limited inventory. People don't care, but many people finance most of their vehicle. Compounding against themselves. I'm a resource driven person. If I am going to spend ~$40,000 of my cash on something, I'm going to make sure I'm getting the absolute best, that includes getting the color I want, the features I will use, and not wasting money on features I wont care about in 2 weeks. That's money you can put towards things to protect your vehicle and make it last better and longer. Let alone having some jack-wad dealership tech lazily apply a protection coating for hundreds if not thousands of extra dollars, which likely leaves your truck worse off than if nothing had been done at all. Plus watching a truck get unloaded with all the shipping plastic on it, directly into your hands comes standard and makes me feel like a gangster, YMMV on this aspect.

I have 3 forms of retirement income at the age of 27, that didn't happen by accident, effective use of resources will ALWAYS be king. I don't like working. I like paying cash and I like dealing with people who are expert at their trade/craft. My expert people I choose to trust get me the rare car I want thousands of dollars cheaper than anywhere else in the state, with no compromises, as long as I'm willing to wait through these means. Dumb not to do it this way in my opinion. But different strokes for different folks I guess.

Bon mot! The alternative seems like a good way to settle for less (unless you get exceedingly lucky, and it would be luck these days), and why do that if you don't have to?

I just have a SR with a 4 banger and 5 speed manual. Silver sky metallic. Here it is when I walked up on it. No low quality products...no snake oil.

You sir, have entirely missed the point of both your own question, and my response. You had asked about, and I answered, in generalities.

    Congrats on the Taco.

Definitely won't rag on you - solid truck at any trim. Much harder to find, for instance, a pro MT or an OR MT without all the add ons that most off roaders aren't going to want (e.g., steps that decrease ground clearance). Congrats on the truck!

I called the dealer to get an update, I asked for an temporary VIN, and he stated that they don’t have one, but rest assured it’s coming late October or early november. He also told me that the vehicle is in Transit. So idk if he’s telling the truth, but I guess I have see what happens next.

I only know my experience with this.
When my dealer had an allocation they were able to provide me with a temp VIN, which included my target build date.

Knowing what I know now about the process, if I couldn't get a temp VIN I would be concerned that they don't have an allocation.
I have no insider knowledge on how this works.

Ooh, mine also says "Recent Arrival" on the dealer website now, along with the two Tacomas that based on the VIN were the last 2 off the production line before mine. (Identical VINs but mine ends 938 and they are 937 and 936.) We went under contract 8/26 with a projected delivery date of 9/23, dealer gave us the temporary VIN and the truck was on their website with that VIN. A week later the salesman told me that the projected date was pushed out to mid-October but the truck had its VIN already so he thought it would be sooner. He never gave me the permanent VIN though, I got it myself from the dealer's site. Two days later he denied he ever told me the truck had its permanent VIN. We haven't heard from him since. We negotiated a good deal on this truck and I think after we walked out they realized how much they had let us take off and are sore about it.

Fog lights. Roll up cover, remote start.
I just happened to go to the dealership to inquire about a Tacoma during that big lease event. They didn’t have any in stock but had a few coming in. Had to wait 3 wks before I saw what I bought. I love it. If I would of known now back in the years, I would have bought theses years ago. I love mine. Good luck fellow “Taco” drivers!

Yeah that is odd for a vehicle " in transit" once its actually shipped it really shouldnt take more than a month

Anyone waiting for a 2021 will have to let the thread know of they end up getting a 2022 or get word from their dealer it'll end up being a 22. I went last week to leave a deposit and I know for sure it'll be a 22 but we have no idea when it'll be accepted since Toyota is finishing off whatever 21s they have left.
