How would you do that? The oil drain is a 14mm, and the trans drain is a 5mm hex, WTF?

Look up video on YouTube, Car Care Nut, the guy is a Toyota master tech. I believe he has a video specifically on the Tacoma transmission oil. One other good channel is Toyota Maintenance .

You'd be surprised how often this happens! But I don't see how beating the OP up on his fuck up is helping anything.

OP: if mine, I would put back the same amount I drained out and be done with it. But if it will help you sleep at night, take it to your dealer and have them verify it has the right amount of fluid in it. Doubt that would cost much to do.

SRBenjamin- Transmission check plug is 5 mm. Both the drain plugs are 14 mm.

Yep, if the transmission shifted fine before you drained 3.5 quarts, just replace them. Don't overthink it.

FWIW. I did a fluid/filter change on my '06. Drained 3 qts. In the end, added an additional 3.5 qts, meaning the transmission was low on fluid by 3.5 qts. (6.5 qts total)

Now, the shifts are butter smooth. Prior to the service, the shifts would hesitate and be abrupt/hard.

Suggest to follow the Temp Check procedure to confirm the fluid level or take it to the dealer.

Did you initially drain with the engine running? Or off? That’s a LOT of missing fluid. How much drained?

Work was done with the engine OFF.

    Drained 3 quarts.

    Removed pan and filter.

    Replaced filter.

    Replaced pan gasket

    Installed pan.

    Installed 3 quarts new fluid.

Did Temp Check procedure. Fluid was low.

Added 3.5 quarts more to reach proper fluid level.

Sorry @Knute, didn’t notice it was you.

Recognize you from the 2nd gen DAF thread. Forgot you did a pan pull too.

Still an awful lot of fluid to be low!

OP, at a minimum you should replace what you lost, but give serious consideration to overfill, temp check, and set level per whatever the correct procedure is for your year Taco, in case the factory fill wasn’t correct.

No problem.....I wondered about your question.....seemed odd. Agreed on the low fluid. Although, I did cure the hard shifts.

In the Spring, I'll probably do a simple DAF and verify with the Temp Check for correct fill.

I clearly haven’t had enough coffee yet this morning, as what I was thinking of was folks who do the level set at the end with the engine off, which causes the level set to be very low as the tranny pump is off. Also the temp is wrong, obviously. Nothing to do with the initial drain.

Just ignore me until this next pot brews.

Since your seeking opinions here’s mine.
I would replace the 3.5 qts that you drained and then maybe add a splash more- maybe 1/8 qt. Additionally since it’s a new truck I’d take it to the Toyota dealership you bought it from and ask them for a complimentary fluid check. They will possibly make you pay for the service but I’d gladly pay the hour labor rate for some peace of mind.

LOL... Kinda difficult to run the Temp Check procedure with the engine off. Yeah, it is an uneasy feeling crawling under the truck with engine running and fiddling with the transmission. Gotta work close to a hot exhaust.

Never seen that happen with 1/2 qt short by adding more the transmission is now working buttery smooth. Its more likely just by adding new atf, it gave you that result or feeling.

Careful reading my friend. Drained 3 quarts, added a total of 6.5 quarts (including the 3 qts drained).............. Lordy.....

They checked all the fluid levels in my tacoma on the 1st service visit....at least so they claim in their service invoice. The service writer told me if you request it within a year or 12k miles they will do it free of charge.
