I was able to add the additional line for $10 per month. I'm on some type of legacy plan with a discount from work. I need to be able with a decent GPS connection for 4 to 5 hours at a time. I don't know if just running GPS uses much data other than phone with cellular have the feature.

Well, GPS would work over GPS, without the use of data due to the fact that you run a separate receiver/antenna for global positioning.

It's the 'map' data that you need the data for unless you download said map beforehand.

You mentioned Gaia, so in this case you would download maps onto said device at home, or on the go via mobile hotspot. Again, the former of the two is more likely unless you're the type to head out on an adventure out of the blue with no pre-planning.

So you'd download said map(s) at home, create a route(s) if necessary, and simply take that device with you. No data plan is necessary at this point and all you'd need is to have GPS/location enabled.

I do this all the time as many areas I venture to have no cell/data reception at all.

Let's say you do have service, and you didn't download a map before arriving to your destination; maps are easily sever hundreds of megs and depending on the signal strength, plan, etc. could take awhile until you fully download said map(s).

Haha the 5-lug bedsides live on! I was wondering what happened to them. Where did the bed come from?

I had a special tack weld drill bit.

@CS_AR I know you didn't tag me initially, just thought I'd offer insight as I have used a Samsung tablet device (mainly to keep my phone topped off) for navigation and have no data plan (or sim card capability).

Ever since I've bought that Milwaukee M18/inverter, and have 2 portable 10,000mah batteries, I quit using the Samsung tablet and strictly use my phone for navigation. Be surprised how quickly you lose reception in Los Padres NF (look at how large it is).

I've been venturing upwards to the Sequoia NF areas and those are rather large as well, and offer absolutely no cell reception for hours on end.

Thank you for confirming. I'm with you on this. I usually download maps at home before I start a trip. About the only real-time interaction I have with GAIA map data is when I save a recorded map at the end of the trail.

I was with a group last weekend that all used Onx. Since I was having trouble with GAIA on the Samsung A12, I downloaded Onx and installed it. So far so good. I do like the ability to trim an OnX map that I recorded. The problem is, I can only share with other Onx users.

Looks like all of the locals use GAIA, people from TX and Missouri are moving to OnX.

Can any of them export to gpx? All these proprietary formats make me grumpy

Strongly suggest OnX, especially if you are mainly Android. Works much better.

That's good to know. I keep a Jackery 500 in the truck. I used it in CO to run my laptop for work when I was in a hotel with no power outlets. LOL.

The Ouachita Mountains have a lot of cell towers for providing communication to surrounding towns. I don't lose cell service there too often.

The Ozarks have very little cell coverage. The GAIA GPS on my Samsung A12 just will not record a route in that area. I've found that people that travel the Ozarks are more likely to use Apple due to GPS and better interface with GAIA. People in the Ouachitas are more likely to use Android with OnX.

There were different native American tribes that inhabited the Ozarks vs. the Ouachitas. Old stories indicated that they didn't much care for each other.
That spirit lives on today. LOL.

Was going to say I only use Gaia cause I've been on it for over 2 years.

About time I switch; was rather disappointed with the implementation of it on my headunit via Android Auto.

Got two of these coming for the big block, pretty small for a huge engine, but more than enough to get over 1000hp

My understanding is that Gaia works great on IOS but is not nearly as good on Android. Apperently it was developed on IOS and ported over to Android. This was my experience with it when I first tried using it on Android. It was a pain in the ass to use, not intuitive and just didn't do what I wanted overall.

OnX has been awesome since I started using it. Works perfectly on my Android devices. The 4Runner has an Android head unit so OnX is perfect there.

The Android Auto interace is so disappointing that its driving me to Apple. I've been using GAIA and have a bunch of maps made in it. But I'm about ready to switch.

I really liked it, but it's very dependent on your phone's power and running status, since it literally uses your headunit as a USB display and touch device and everything is rendered on the phone.

I'm not sure but I think their system is the same, the phone renders the content and the headunit is just a compatible display device.
