why? pretty sure that would make the front end less stable handling in turns... in theory

One example is it depends on how your rear shocks are setup. For example, I did a standard rear shock relocation and I needed more aggressive backspacing so my tires wouldn’t rub the shocks while articulating. I added small spacers to the rear to clear that and when I was stock width front end, that made my back end .75” wider per side than the front. I didn’t make the front match due to more clearancing issues at the firewall.

Was meaning no to having the rear wider than the front. I ran spacers for years and years without issue to keep a proper stance. Only finally ditched all spacers a few months ago when I finished the rear axle swap

My rear is currently wider than the front. Only issue I have is I do occasionally snag a rear tire on something when I'm in tight spots.

to clear shocks in the back. I've had a wheel almost fall off before cause of spacers so i'm a little scarred from that and my front suspension cycles pretty well without hitting cab mounts right now. I don't wanna run more spacers than necessary AND have to chop more stuff to clear in the front

I'm running 1.5" spacers all around but I also have +30 offset wheels on right now. I'll be moving to 0 offset soon.

No reason a spacer that is properly installed would be a safety issue.

The wider the rear the easier it is for it to break traction in a corner and come around. So the narrower the more likely it is to grab traction and not want to rotate. In the end it is a compromise on handling preference. Your front width is constantly changing based on where they are in the travel. (A-arms). In my old days of ATV MX we changed rear width based on track conditions and riding style.

that wouldn't be too bad honestly. DCLB is like stupid stable with how long the wheelbase is. Always makes me feel like i'll roll it long before it starts to slide on dry pavement.
Although quads are a lot more square. Would that change those effects?

I guess maybe Im misinterpreting the question a little. I was thinking you mean significantly wider rear track than the front, as opposed to matching track widths while still clearing shocks (tundra/t100 axle).

Ive ran spacers on the front pre LT, and ran spacers on the rear to match the LT since. Never had an issue with them, believe they are 1". Not enough space to run shocks outboard, but enough to make the truck not look like it skipped leg day.

The issue isn’t whether or not spacers are a good idea. I think most of us know quality ones are fine.

He specifically wanted to know if a marginally wider (1”-2”) rear (i.e. spacers to clear rear shocks) would cause any issues. The answer is while theoretically it’s not ideal for handling, realistically it won’t cause any noticeable effect for the vast majority of Tacoma’s, if not all of them.

Which means more rubbing at the firewall/everywhere else, depending on your wheel/tire setup.

lol I don't even want to hear about 2nd / 3rd gen guys complaining about rubbing - you guys have to tub about as much or less for 37's as I did for 35's

You ain’t lying. I had to tub the fuck out of a 3rd gen 4Runner for 35s, which I assume is a similar wheel well to first gens

I also tubbed my firewall for 35s but didn’t have to do as much.
