I hope it helps. It sounds like they primed the pump for a bait and switch tactic. Really burns me up, especially when this is their mission statement:E401447D-3588-44A4-AAFB-697A83328C9C.jpg

We only have one Toyota dealership on the Island. I would be pissed off too. Even back in 2017, I had to put down a security deposit. But they never charged my debit.

So they never asked for deposit of any kind when you agreed on price of truck etc before it arrived? When I purchased mine, it was on their allocation list, they gave me a price, I agreed, put a 500$ deposit down and it took two months to arrive.

On one hand selling to the person who pays the most makes some sort of sense...but obviously they should just tell everyone thats the way the show is going down. From outside looking in, it seems obvious thats the game they were playing. Not taking a deposit on the truck once they knew it was allocated to their lot, telling you to hold onto the check when they did etc. Like they're running some FB marketplace style shite :).

You will find another truck. And with no money lost on your end thats good, but it also means that would be a pretty boring News 5 Investigates special. You are out time, and didn't get the truck you want, there's a lot more terrible shit going on in the world these days, id rec just say your piece as you did, and move on. Good luck .

Deposits don’t hold any legal ground. They aren’t a contract. It just shows you are interested.

Every Toyota dealership I've done business with has been a mismanaged nightmare filled with butthole salespeople and a service staff that makes me uncomfortable leaving the truck in their care.

There have been a couple dealerships who I've interacted but not transacted with which seemed much better, but who knows how that might break down once you enter into their sales process.

If Toyota wasn't cranking out trucks I wanted so badly they would never see my business (through the antiquated dealership model) ever again.

Yep. Just noting that it was part of my process. Dealer I used even told me it was refundable on both ends when I gave it to them, I guess, like you said, it was more for them to have at least a minimum feeling I was intent on buying/waiting. But also of note is they didn't ask him for one, even though they could have just returned it to him and sold the truck to another customer.

Signing "paperwork" is meaningless (as you obviously found out). Next time, sign and get a copy of the retail purchase order with the VIN and have the dealer also sign it. Get copies of everything.

Remember, if a car salesman's lips are moving they are lying.

Yes. I wrote a letter to Berkshire Hathway. Don't expect anything but found the "Berkshire Hathaway Code of Business Conduct & Ethics" online....pointed out what the dealership violated. I'm sure nothing will come of it, but felt better writing to them.

What they told me was they didn't want a deposit just get down there ASAP after they call and tell me it's on the lot. I made it within an hour then they told me that the truck wasn't even on the lot and they expected it in a few hours, "but that's ok, cause we can get the paperwork out of the way"....so we did.

Yeah, if they told me it was a silent auction or that someone else had just shown up and was interested, that would have been one thing, but I had signed all of the paperwork, they'd approved the sale, and ran our credit (even though we were paying cash for the truck).

Absolutely agree....moving on...it's another day and I'm letting go....just making sure others don't get the same unethical/dishonest treatment that I did.

Totally...thanks....I filed a complaint now with the State of AZ, too. I do have a picture of the paperwork with the stock # on it that the management approved (but doesn't show the manager's signature on it, unfortunately). Oh well....I will get a better truck and hopefully they will lose some business from their shady business practices. spread the word to stay away from Camelback Toyota!

    LS1 swap with nitros.
They never had the truck at all. They played you. Go find a truck in stock and make a deal. Sad but it’s the reality of stealerships.

Seems right based on what one dealer told me, which is there is no "ordering" a truck from the factory. Dealerships put in a request, and may get lucky enough to fill the request in a timely manner, but apparently often they just trade cars with other dealerships within a certain radius.

To find my truck I just called dealerships asking for the specific truck desired and had them search their entire area. If they didn't find it, I called a dealership outside the area they searched, moving further away as I went along. Eventually found the truck in MO and had to fly to pick it up, but also didn't have to settle in the slightest or be put on a waiting list -- from initial call to pickup within 3 weeks.

Sorry this happened to you. There’s just less and less integrity left in our country. It’s really shameless to come to terms and then do a 180. It’s all about the Benjamin’s… all the time.

Do they have a new TRD Pro 4Runner on the lot? If they do see if they will sell it to you for MSRP.

when i was about 10 my hockey team flew from Alaska to Denver to compete in a tournament. we had an evening free and went to a colorado avalanche game. I was the BIGGEST patrick roy fan; posters all over my room, mimicked his playing style, matched my gear to his, action figures, etc. we waited outside the locker room for over an hour, he was one of the last ones to come out. not even that many people still there. finally he walks out and i ask him for an autograph on a hat. he goes 'sorry boys, not tonight' and walks past everyone. i was crushed, heartbroken even, and never cheered for him again. ripped all my posters down and was a brodeur fan from then on.

not that this has any relevance to the original topic but i feel better getting that off my chest.

Hmmmm......OP, did you lock in the truck with any sort of deposit?

If not, then the truck is on the open market. You may be SOL.

FWIW, you should work with another dealer and be prepared to "lock in" the sale with a deposit. Make sure the paperwork includes details about options, model (VIN), price, deposit (refundable) and delivery dates. Then lock it down with a deposit. Make it a binding contract with money exchange and signatures of seller and buyer. Keep copies.

Your previous arrangement was not a binding contract. It was open because no cash was exchanged to bind the sale.

    Good Luck.
