Yeah I got a HF mig170 a couple weeks ago and I’ve only used it 4x. Hoping to dial in my procedure and get some cool stuff built. Thank you sir! I appreciate that advice and I will check it out

The advice earlier on wearing a respirator .. well... I have never been one to use one at home alot, and with my bout with covid earlier this year, I have discovered the hard way it is indeed something I MUST start a earing more often.

You'll seen the pictures of the finished belt grinder.. well what I didn't mention was about week later I ended up in the urgent care after coughing up a bit of blood.

It turned out I had given my self a case of chemical pneumonia from the combination of paint fumes and grinding dust. And missed 3 days of work with unpaid time off (saving the vacation for a upcoming trip) I was pretty messed up for about week and even now still feeling a bit of lingering affects. This after a course of strong antibiotics and steroids and now likely to have an inhaler as a standby.

And yes, an order was placed for PPE new respirator with organic vapor and dust filters. Added in couple full face shields, and a couple googles for chemical work and more clear and tinted safety glasses.

Based on the heat affected zone you're getting enough penetration for the majority of things you'd ever want to build with that welder.

If you cut some coupons out of different thickness materials and practice more lap, butt, and tee joints you'll get a feel for doing it without blowing through the thinner material or focusing too much on the thick.

Should experiment with an old pair of motorcycle goggles - I think you have them no?

Yeah, fuck that. Given it only gets about 100 degrees here tops but I'm suited up in carharts, leather red wing boots, and full welding jacket when I weld, year round. Watch a piece on slag drop off a stick weld and through someone's tennis shoes and you'll remember molten metal doesn't stop until it hits the bone. Might be extreme but I try to walk away from my garage the same as I came into it. Remember Charlie.

Summers get to 117 here in Vegas. Garage even with the swamp cooler middle of the day is still probably 100-105. Welded and fabricated lots of summers In shorts and short sleeve shirt and flip flops. Just have to be extra careful. Even when it’s nice still in shorts and t shirt and vans. Maybe in the winter I get a sweater.

I do want to try a decent lightweight apron to help save clothes. Sparks and sharp material ruin so many shirts and shorts.

That’s a good idea. I’ll have to keep the Moto goggles in mind if I keep fogging up the safety goggles. I just got a new pair a few weeks ago so it’d be worth a shot with the old ones.

Try working in rubbers for 5 to 7 hours straight in 100 degrees... what you can't see is the long sleeve fr and short sleeve fr shirt under he is wearing.

    2-1-1.jpg

Gloves are so fall pf sweqt.that when you raise your hands up. It pours out like a water faucet. There are times you can come down and grab a cold water and peel your rubbers off for a few minutes and get the grunt to rinse your gloves out to.bot only cool them off but the get rid of the salt and the risk of tracking over. Other times your holding a hot phase and your stuck in rubber for the duration.

So for the short duration I am actually welding, no matter the temperature. I will take the extra.layer.of protection. My days of arc tan and doing the cherry dance are over..

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I must say the eye protection options now as compared to my misguided youth in the late sixties are much better I can put my safety glasses on before walking into the shop and forget they are on.

i kinda like safety glasses and a face shield then over the years it was working around others that was the most dangerous .

Sparks and flying objects flying across the shop take a lucky bounce up under your eye protection .

After some time you learn not to shoot the grinding sparks right back into your face though some take longer then others to learn this lesson .

Grinders can kick back and break your nose easy. Happened to me after 20 years of using one without incident.

I use this one for welding and woodworking. It’s awesome and built right. Durable waxed cotton. I’ve yet to burn a hole through it.

Thanks. May order that one as I didn’t want one that goes around your neck and pulls on it. Just wish they where a little shorter
