Plug and Play Brake Light taps

I haven't given up on this, but combining brake and turns gets tricky. I believe @caribe makaira had a way to do, and if I ask real nice and explain that I am a forgetful idiot, he might tell me again?

Just wanting to point out to @Diode Dynamics that there is plenty of room in these housing, and even an open slot in the deutsch connector to have 2 backlight colors.... Like Amber and red, red and white, or amber and white.... Oh, the things I could do!

 

I would think maybe the 4? I wouldn't know where to begin on adding a brake controller (that' not entirely true. I would begin something like "hey, Caribe.... )

I don’t really know either but my ‘02 Tundra has an aftermarket harness for a brake controller so that may help us a tiny bit. I was planning to clean it up when I install my RedArc.

This is a cool idea. It would mean that more hierarchy would be required in order to control them without some sort of external controller. For example, red (for braking) would be lowest priority, then amber (for turning/flashing) would slot above that, and the main chips would turn on for reverse function.

There's a two-stage hierarchy already built into them, so the idea isn't that far out. The backlight LEDs turn off when the main emitters fire. This is a great feature because it makes plugging them into the trailer port for my use very easy.

Perhaps @Diode Dynamics hasn't ventured here because they would basically be full-function taillights at this point, and I think that means DOT compliance would be required to advertise them as such. As it is, the backlights work best as simply accent lighting, especially with the different swappable optics that would make compliance difficult or impossible.

 

I would be happy with just another color option, same hierarchy on both and just let it be field configured. Or, for what I originally wanted to do, a separate ground for the backlight color would have been way cool to. My original plan was to have White Primary/White backlight, but have the backlight hooked up like the puddle pods. But since those are ground switched, I couldn't do it.

 

We have plans for the future, there is a reason we picked 4 pins instead of 3

Very perceptive. Yes, the compliance concerns have held us back from making a full "tail light pod" or something along those lines, but we do have some fun things planned that are not intended for tail light replacement.

DD is selling this reverse light kit with taillight taps for the 5th gen 4Runner. I wonder if it would be possible to source the connectors and swap pins to use the turn signals instead of the running lights (I have amber backlights and 4000K white lamps).

In an aftermarket bumper? Using which lights specifically? Do you know the connector? Do you know the current draw?
