So my dad has an 89 4runner with the 3.blow and we just replaced one of his coolant temp sensor; the one that sends a signal to the throttle and I assume let's it know when it needs to be choked and when it should open the choke. A few times a week it would crank and flood out, and we have seemingly remedied the issue... Now that I have made you read a paragraph of back story, does the 1 gr have this as well? I know that e85 doesn't crank well in the cold but if my truck is getting incorrect signals of when to choke and when not to, that would explain why my truck really hates the cold. It really blew my mind that the they didnt just splice into the signal from the thermostat to the 4runner what it needed to know, but they didn't then, and I suppose Toyota is the epitomy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it” so why wouldn't there be one in 2005...

Does your MAF read air temp properly?

Does your coolant temp read properly with a scanner?

Yes... Well I mean I haven't stuck an instant read in my coolant but, it is typically ambient right at start up and runs 188 ish normal driving. Maf seems to be dead on, based on ambient temp usually within a a couple degrees of ambient as long as I'm going 40+ obviously temperature climbs at red lights. But the sensor I was inquiring about doesn't send signal to my dad's temperature gauge so I assumed the same if it existed in mine

Sorry to see you end the Turbo, totally understand, but sorry just the same. So are there any OV turbo kits running around, that are on TW?

More restriction on a turbocharged exhaust will make you more knock prone and slow down building boost.

Wouldn’t be surprised someone from the dealer ends up buying the truck.

But like you said support is lacking. Can’t even get my base tune

"Choked or not choked" is the incorrect way to think about this on a fuel injected vehicle. Most vehicles reference engine coolant temperature as an axis for enrichment, especially starting enrichment. While it's likely that some sort of starting enrichment table based on coolant temperature exists in the Tacoma's Denso 736k ECU, that table is not currently exposed in HP Tuners. Here's an example of a table from an LS1, another port fuel injected engine. These tables show a priming pulse and a secondary pulse for starting. The priming pulse isn't even used at operating temperature, and the secondary injection mass at operating temperature is ~1/10 what it would be at ~5deg Fahrenheit. So you're injecting way more on a cold start than you are when the engine is warm. Additionally, when calibrating for Ethanol, it's not uncommon to need 2-3x the starting enrichment that's used in a gasoline calibration. If you're having issues starting on Ethanol I'd guess you actually need even more fuel than you're giving it, but without access to a starting enrichment table it's difficult to do anything about that. You could theoretically set up some sort of "cold start injector" like the old 22res had if you're able to run them via an external injection controller, but that's kinda a mess.

But is there a stand alone sensor on the 1 gr or does the ecu just pull from the same sensor that the thermostat and engine temp gauge/torque app pull from? My point was that if there is a sensor that is bad that could be responsible for the bulk of my cold start issues... Hopefully haha

I'm not intimately familiar with the sensor package on the 1GR-FE, but I'm 99% certain it would just use a common coolant temperature sensor. The extra cost of an additional sensor per engine is difficult to stomach if it's unnecessary (which in this case, it would be).

Yes. It gets its data from the coolant temp sensor. Some maps also use the MAF's IAT sensor.

My hands have the strongest desire to build some 1GR turbo headers. For a single setup.

@JustDSM , I have been contemplating how to do a twin setup and make the 3 into 1 merge. Just depends on what kind of flange that you would want it to be.

What flange is on your manifold? T25 or T3?

Is the turbo flange parallel to the head flange, or at an angle? As in closest edge of say T3 flange to the head flange, being in parallel with each other.

I cannot remember. Did you get your turbo in yet? If so, what flange is that?

For @BassAckwards, his is a ~2.5" v-band flange. So that is what is being built first.

For those with the alibaba manifold, what I don't know is if the mating surface of the turbo flange is perpendicular to the head flange or not, and what I asked dirtdigginjoe.
