Well just trying to keep the OP from possibly making a mistake. Some things are cool to joke about but oil levels are probably not one of them. I'm really a light hearted guy but I'll STF now and crawl back under my rock since all of all of you are old motor head experts.

    I'm curious about that also.

I always warm it up some before I change oil. Then let it drip for several minutes while I grease the driveline and have another cup of coffee. Five quarts brings it to the full mark on the dipstick.

Anything around 5.5 quarts is fine. No need to be exact. Even with 6qts in there nothing bad will happen

Ummmm......OP, have you looked in the Owner's Manual. Typically, in the back pages the OM will state capacity for the engine options. You just need to look in the column for your engine.

No guessing, no weeding through internet answers.......to determine which answer is accurate.

    How is that?
    What seals?
It isn't going to increase the oil pressure. As long as the crankshaft and rods aren't whipping up the oil there isn't a problem being slightly over.

The crankcase is vented via the PVC system.

Over filling engine oil is not as bad as under filling but it can be close.
A low oil level can result in oil starvation in the plain bearings that require a steady flow to keep the journals up off the shells unlike roller and ball bearings that only require a drop or 2 per second.
A high oil level can result in foaming from the crank throws that can be moving north of 100 mph at redline hitting the oil. Foamy oil flow to the plain bearings can result in journal to shell contact under load.
I am referring to over and under by a lot of course but it is advisable to keep the level between the full and the add marks on the stick.
    Ray.

The manual for my 05 V6 states 5qts. Sometime after this the manual was updated to 5.5 qts.

I’m pretty sure I put around 5.4 qt in my xrunner to get it to the top dot. I do make an effort drain very thorough, jack it up level so it drains as much as possible. Maybe the Napa filters I like to use are also slightly bigger than a Toyota.

Probably not, or you'd have a hard time closing the hood. But they might be bigger than a Toyota oil filter.
Ah sorry, I couldn't resist.... the devil made me do it! :D

what particular seals are you talking about? That sounds like hogwash to me. If that’s the case every hill you drive on we’d all be “blowing seals”

You’ll never know who’s blowing seals on hills because people sure as hell aren’t going to own up to it. Unless a seal turns them in.

FWIW, I save the odd 1/2 quart for the lawnmower or snowblower.

Just did oil change yesterday. 5 1/2 qts with filter reached the top dimple on the dipstick for an '06 4.0L. Used Valvoline 5w30 syn with a Toyota filter. Rotated tires and lubed prop shafts. Checked fluids, cleared leaves and debris from vents and cowls and doglegs.

I discovered I need to replace my floor jack. I need to add 2 2x4s to get enough lift to raise the front tires off the ground and set jack stands.

everytime i change the oil, its exactly 5 quarts. that is after i let the car run for a min after the oil change, i will check it and its right in the middle of the dipstick. works out great.

hate changing the oil on my sisters lexus GX460. that thing takes 7-8 qts so we have to buy 2 of the 5 qts bottles of mobile one from wally world

side question. does anyone know how long engine oil can sit once its opened? wondering if it has a shelf life.

Exxon for example recommends a 5 year shelf life.
