I'm using a dial caliper right this minute. I could have grabbed the digital one but it was 2 feet farther from me and I have the ability to use either without with ease.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I have more trust in a dial caliper than I do digital.

Also, Pet Peeve - A dial caliper is not a Vernier Caliper. I wanna smack a bitch sometimes.

I have a venier caliper too. It's what I used to do my scribing. I used to use harbor freight digitals for that, but people keep stealing those...

I just like it because no one knows how to use them so they never "borrow" it and I never have to go looking for it. I have a vernier micrometer too.

I had a digital caliper, it was simply amazing and could read my mind. Anytime I needed to use it the battery was dead. How did it know when to crap out on me? Pitched it when I inherited my Dad's Mitutoyo.

I have one that turns on when you move the slide and it's very sensitive. I've had it turn on after I turned it off and set it down on the bench. It does fractions too which I thought would be nice for wood working. I mean it's handy when you want to get down to the 128th division for that extra close fit.

Yeah, there's a video on YouTube that goes into detail on this. Long story short digital calipers have a phantom drain. This allows them to know where they are when you turn them on by opening them. Otherwise you would have to origin them every time you turn them on. SOME brands, like mitutoyo draw so little it is difficult to measure, while others like harbor freight specials draw 10-20x as much.

That said, there are solutions for the Cheapos. People 3d print a little wedge that inserts into the harbor freight and disconnects the battery when not in use. Lasts longer, but is much more inconvenient.

Found my first cell phone this week in a box and took a pic of it 5 minutes ago. It was a Panasonic and used it in about 1985 IIRC.
Checkout the size of the battery.

Then, years later, started with first iPhones and now have an XS Max and a X ... we have 4 unlimited cell phones ( X & 8) in the family with Verizon and the monthly cost is less than $120.00 per month for all 4 phones with military discount and direct billing.

I hate doing business with Apple but ... their iPhones have NEVER let me down ... NEVER ...

OH ... I swear by the .. OtterBox Defender Case w/ Belt Clip Cover ... too .... never cracked an iPhone screen yet and have had many, many drops on hard surfaces over the years.

When I was in high school, $400 ($2,000 in 2021) would buy you a 4 function calculator. The physics teacher was trying to teach us how to use a slide rule and the smart aleck rich kids with calculators in the back of the class would call out the answer before he could finish. One of my best memories of high school. I convinced my engineer dad he should upgrade his calculator and give me his old one. I then joined the smart aleck kids in the back.

    My first calculator -

My personal WTF from today. Me & my girlfriend are expecting a baby at the end of the month. I installed the car seat & she wanted me to take it to the free CHP "car seat inspection event". I arrive & immediately 2 officers start walking around my car looking it over. I fill out the paperwork & the lady opens the back door to have a look. As she's inspecting it a junior officer (in a polo shirt, not uniform) opens my passenger front door & is looking around. The lady asks me to remove the car seat so she can look at the base. Ok, cool, I take it out & am about to put it in the hatch back when a uniformed osifer rushes to my side to be there when I open my hatch. So I don't open it & he gets real awkward. A few minutes later I open the hatch & put the seat in it, then the lady calls me up so I jump in the back seat to listen to her. A minute later I'm still in the back seat taking with the lady & I notice the uniformed officer rummaging through my hatch. I only have a couple things back there but he's moving them around, clearly looking for probable cause. The cadet or whoever he was in a polo shirt is back in the front seat looking in the center console & fumbling around with my girlfriends empty Rx bottles. I call both of them out & ask if they received my consent for a search. They say I gave her permission to inspect the seat so yes. I ask the lady if she's a sworn peace officer, which she isn't, so I tell both guys to kick rocks as her permission doesn't transfer to them. They tried to argue it until I mention the 4th amend. Clearly upset at this point I'm just trying to leave. Uniformed osifer leans into my front passenger window to interrogate me about my windshield tint. I hold up the number 5 with my right hand and just stare at him. He gives me a half ass threat/lecture about not being surprised when I get busted for it soon & I pull away with him still leaning in my window.

What a pathetic excuse for a shakedown. Lesson for SoCal people: just watch the YouTube video for your car seat installation. They spent more time & energy trying to bust me & violate my rights than they did making sure my son's seat is installed safely.

What does the CHP know about car seats that you couldn't already know from the manufacturer's manual? My guess is they set the whole thing up as a ploy to catch criminals. Like when police offer prize money and dumb criminals show up.

I appreciate the work officers do, but you have to watch the young ones. They are so about making a name for themselves, that they forget to treat people fairly. These days it about how can we catch and screw up someone’s life. Back in the day when I would go on dude alongs with my uncle ( former CHP ), he treated everyone by their attitude to him. If you were an ass, no breaks. If you showed him respect, there was a good chance that he only give you a safety lecture.
To use a car seat safety inspection to try to catch expecting parents for some kind of crime, is lazy police work and should not be allowed by the police force or the people.

So I guess too many people on Facebook don't know their email address. So now it seems as long as the password matches the account, Facebook will just log you into any old account even if you put in the wrong email...
