looks like my neighbor getting ready for the world to end at the big Y2k hype.

The fact his house did not burn down to this day I can`t understand

One of the best ideas was to get a Diesel Generator put it in the back of a Station Wagon and have the window open just enough to get the cord out.

This was the same neighbor that during the time in limbo before closing ran a 8/3AWG cable up to an outlet in my soon to be building Running his house for about 3 weeks

Im not understanding it. Unless there was special lights installed? Or can you power 110v lights with DC power?

I knew it was a gamble, turned out further research would've told me it wouldn't work for my purposes and could've spared me buying it but it was the only one I could find anywhere so I had to jump on it in case it was what I needed. Still got 8 days left for someone else to bid, we will see.

They probably used 12 volt automotive/RV lights.

Yes a regular old 120 volt incandescent bulb will light up on DC, the more voltage the brighter the light - until you exceed 120 volts or so that is, then things get dark again.

As far as shock hazard, a 12 volt system doesn't have enough enough zap to zap you. There isn't enough difference between 12 volts and ground, potential energy I believe is the correct term.

1930s era farms had DC systems, they had a battery bank and a Delco Light Plant generator. 32 volts I believe.

Now if a metal tool bridged the two conductors that could get interesting.
An automotive battery can huff out 7-800 amps right now.

I saw a fellow set an adjustable wrench on a car battery once - from across the room fortunately.

about 8 years ago when we were at our old location for work, there was a little shop across the street that planted trees all over the country. They did all the maintenance on the vehicles. One day I looked outside to see a huge fireball coming from under a car they were working on.
Boss man and I grabbed extinguishers and went running, got it out before the FD arrived. Talking to the guy after said he was changing a fuel filter and put the wrench up for a second, right between the posts of the battery. All ended well but could have been way worse.

Well fellers, on today's episode of Past Tech with Rusty we have a car built when Lyndon Johnson was in office, a 1966 Ford.

    KIMG1700.jpg

Yep, front drum brakes - big ones at that. Small cars of the day like Mustangs and Darts had 9" drums with the 6 cylinder engine, 10" with a V8.

This big Ford came with 11" drums plus a 3" wide shoe as it is a station wagon.

The sharp eyed may have noticed something missing in the above picture -- hint: look at 2 o'clock.

    KIMG1708.jpg

The front shoe return spring was floating around in there -- that explains that "funny noise"...

Notice the lining of the right hand shoe is shorter than the one on the left. The short shoe (primary) goes in the front - these brakes are called "self energizing", the primary shoe moves out and is pulled down by the rotation of the drum, the self adjuster at the bottom transfers some force to the bottom of secondary shoe giving the assembly a wedging action - mechanical assist.

    KIMG1709.jpg

Aw, snap! Even though we generally associate red with stop this ain't good.. We are looking at a (bad) wheel cylinder for you disk brake kids.

    KIMG1710.jpg

Well now, things are looking up. The wheel cylinder is held on by a big nut on the top post. The shoes have a half moon shape where they meet the post as part of the self energizing design.

Even though this car is 55 years old it has lived a sheltered life, the steel brake line unscrewed easily from the brake hose.

Naturally the new wheel cylinder (Raybestos brand) was made in a very populated overseas country.
It looks and fits fine -- the bleeder screw takes a metric wrench.

    KIMG1711.jpg

Hey! What what do you know, I remembered where all the parts went!

(Chilton Time Saver: Look at the other side of the car, it is a mirror, not identical)

Still need to do the other side, no free floating parts fortunately. Let's not forget the fun of front wheel bearings -- tomorrow is another day...

Historical footnote: When GM introduced the "X body" front wheel drive cars (Chev Citation) they put self energizing brakes on the rear just like a rear drive car -- being as this was GMs first small front wheel drive they overlooked that FWD cars have nowhere near the weight in the back -- those cars were famous for the rear wheels locking up on hard stops.
