@jaapsheep I’d say how comfortable you are trailering plays a big part, and livestock is different in that it shifts unpredictably. I’ve had four hogs in a livestock trailer mess with my braking enough to make me nervous. Lots of patience and plan ahead for any stops or hills, huge following distance to the next vehicle, etc.

Spent last weekend towing a few things:

My brother had trailer harness wiring issues and uhaul wouldn't let him leave with the trailer so I had to go rescue him.

My buddy bought my girlfriend's old appliances for his rental properties and ended up locking his only keys in his FJ so I had to rescue him.

Made me realize I needed a bigger drop hitch. For reference, the one on the left is a 12" drop...

thanks for the advice, I did buy the trailer and am getting a bit nervous about the trip to pick it up. Will be driving it home empty at 2300 pounds, new to brake controllers which I just had installed. Some hills, hoping it doesn't want to push me downhill much. Trip is 4 hours one way to the central interior of BC and home to the Okanagan. Sheep don't move around much and are a bit lighter than hogs. I am pretty comfortable with my little trailer which holds 8 sheep, weighs about 1500 with no brakes. Made a 2 hour trip with it this week and it felt good. Hoping the bigger trailer doesn't add too much stress. The little one is pretty hillbilly. I'd like to be able to haul 10 or 15 lambs at 100 pounds each. The pic is a couple days ago with 7 lambs in the trailer.

thanks! I've been having second thoughts after reading all the towing posts, wondering if I've over-faced my truck. Guess once I'm on the road I'll know the answer... I'm most nervous about the longer downhills, I guess 4th or 3rd and keep the speed down. My introduction will be a 600 km trip with some bigger hills but not mountain roads.

People love to complain about not being able to tow on the limit at 95mph. I've towed about 10k km with this setup. Truck is stable and pretty easy to drive, and holds 70mph up hills at 3-krpm just fine. Cruises at about 2500. I have airbags in the rear to correct the squat now, which I'd recommend if you're like me and tow 5k+ miles a year. Truck tows fine without them, its just nice to be able to hit a button and have the truck sit level.

Nice setup! you're making my trip look a lot easier :) trailer will be empty first trip, so only 2300 #. 2nd trip with about 1000 pounds of lambs (which don't move around a lot). I really don't need to do more than 90 to 100 kph, not in any rush. you'll like the name of my new trailer :) http://www.reimerranching.com/2018maverick13combohorsetrailer-243380.html

Good question, a had always assumed it was to keep it from freezing up here in the Northeast. I do know that in certain areas (The Adirondack Park) the use some other liquid, maybe beet juice or something?

haha thought you'd like it! Made the trip yesterday, 600 km round trip, towed it home from Clinton empty in some pretty heavy wind on the nose and cross wind. Only had a wiggle once. Didn't need the brakes, the wind did the trick. Truck knows it's there, so we'll see how many sheep I can haul. Some pretty big hills on part of the route requiring 3rd. Pic is top of the hill out of Cache Creek in the Fraser Canyon. Was pretty hilly through there!

There ya go. Wind definitely kills some power. These trucks are way better than they get credit for.

I suspect you'll be using 2nd and 3rd more on those long downhills. I've generally found with my 3000#'ish trailer on 6% I'm usually using 3rd. On 7% and some 8% I've found 2nd to be the gear that holds... on a few I had to slow down to 15'ish and put into 1st...

On the very steep unpaved forest roads, well in excess of 10% thankfully for fairly short distances, albeit with hairpins at the bottom, I discovered that you can put into 1st gear and 4LO and it will keep you at a max of about 5mph.

Made some changes to my trailer... put a 3" lift on trailer, a larger 5200# axle, and have rims and tires that match my Tacoma, lifting trailer a total of 6"
