The EV motor replaces the torque converter like in the Prius and other Hybrid Toyotas.

    this and that...
i aint gonna lie the trd pro looks fricking sweet. im digging the interior and the camo-like print on the seats. not too sure how i feel about the motor choices though. i woulda been fine with an updated v8; paired with hybrid technology if you wanted to be cutting edge. or a maybe a diesel option since a diesel video was drop on toyota usa website. maybe that option is down the line or for another vehicle entirely. just weird they would drop it on toyota usa and not corporate if they have no itention on bringing a diesel here. anyhow, all in all i like the truck, but would like to see more real world numbers on the engine choices.

I disagree with this, but I appreciate the end of your statement, a lot! That's what makes choice so important.

Looks like they're keeping the torque converter with the hybrid, unlike other hybrids.

For any technical brains that are curious how Toyota implements their hybrid stuff, this is interesting insight.

When long travel and fender kits come out for this it will probably be the sexist full-size on the market. It’ll 100% give raptors a run for their money. Lots of potential with the ECU and turbos, although the ecu will probably take years to crack.

Toyota often advertises less HP then the cars actually have.

    Than.

Lots of car companies leave power off the table or charts. It's not illegal to understate or detune power in a marketing ploy for later use. Whether Toyota is or not, no one knows.

My biggest complaint with my tundra is fuel mileage. But I knew that when I bought it. Otherwise it has been a solid truck

According to this video (start at the 20 minute mark) the chief engineer says it's a 3.5 liter engine. Although I'm sure he could have made a mistake. Very interesting video regarding why they chose that powertrain and talking about torque (earlier in video). I hope they apply that logic to the new generation tacoma.

    Interesting collection of vehicles.

Ooh, you a spendy one aren't ya? :D With all dem markups too.

Yes and just like this Tundra, still on track for timely launch in Q4 2023 (September Job 1). I don't know how Toyota does it and hope there are no teething issues, by stubbornly committing to launch dates set pre-COVID/chip sh. It will be the first midsized TNGA-F vehicle, after the large ones finish up in 2022.

As for the hybrid, definitely not a twin turbo. At best, hope for the 500h powertrain making it into the Tacoma. If the RX 350 has virtually the same engine as a TRD Pro Tacoma, mounted transversely, perhaps RX 500h (borrowed from LS 500h and LC 500h), makes it into 2024 Tacoma. I4 Hybrid is confirmed and perhaps, longitudinal variation of T24A-FTS Turbo I4.

2018? Oops, that's not nice LOL. That's what I felt when I finally saw it in full months ago, when we all did. Feels less like a sumo wrestler, more like a rabid MMA fighter. No longer has that visual heft and espouses the image of a Tacoma XL. Toyota wanted this, like at the sales numbers for the 3rd generation Tacoma and segment domination since 2005.

This is not only late to market, they also designed it years ago as a result and of course time passes on, so hopefully it is kept current after a few years.

    Amen, amen.

Well, the next Tacoma has already been designed and is a done deal. It being Toyota's cash cow, I imagine from what I've heard, a more conservative approach was taken in developing it over the last few years. Unlike the Tundra, which was rather inoffensive. One heard similar in early 2015 and look at the sales charts for the Tacoma.

Unfortunately, this is a recurring issue to date and one that annoys me as well greatly. Took their merry time to commit to new Body On Frame vehicles, on the premise y'all would keep buying their stuff anyway regardless. Almost killed off a few of them too, until the numbers increased out of nowhere.

I still can't wrap my head around how so much criticism there was for the 2014 4Runner, 2014 Lexus GX 460, and 2016 Tacoma. Yet, they are all mysteriously enjoying record sales like never before and Toyota didn't know what to do with themselves, considering they were so dated on the inside and wanted to cancel the former two.

Had no problem delaying the next generation 4Runner, literally into 2024, because they're confident they won't lose any sales in the meantime. If people would just stop buying old sh*t, they'd get the message, but...

I wouldn't say that, as I personally know that these ideas came out of the same think tank and after the separation, at Ford, successfully beat Toyota to market by 15 months (December 2020 vs March 2022). These plans have been in progress for 10 years honestly, so no that assertion I disagree with, even as the opposition. See why:

    https://www.autoweek.com/news/a1881996/after-bad-breakup-ford-and-toyota-race-hybrid-pickups/

In this respect though, thanks! Glad you do! I get so tired of hearing about the overhyped Ram interiors, which are quite decent, but are nowhere near the holy grail so many claim them to be. It's just a matter of rooting for the perceived underdog in RAM and dogging the champion in F-150, because it's an easy target to attack with little to no basis. Really sick of it in fact, as it's not supposed to be a Rolls-Royce.

I think though that Toyota has done a quality job here and GM has corrected their interior design pretty well for 2022. Titan is unfortunate though.

I believe they evolved their own design philosophy and still ended up with a revolutionary design, at least in respect to the previous generation model. Nothing here seems borrowed from anyone, outside of maybe Volvo or old Raptor.

The funny thing I remember, was back in April 2013 (media reveal), SO MANY people were attacking that thing and saying Toyota was going to sink in sales and botched it. "It's so ugly, looks like a sea creature, looks like the predator!"
    2014_Toyota_4Runner_007.jpg
After it went on sale 5 months later and 11 months after the fact in March 2014, they were eating their words. 4Runner's 5+ year slump reversed with the highest intensity and never looked back.
    4Runner Sales.jpg
I still can't understand what even happened with that almost 8 years later. They haven't even fallen below 5k in monthly sales since 2014. It's why Toyota refused course begrudgingly and undid the 4Runner's planned demise.

They wanted to substitute the RAV4 and Highlander, in place of the 4Runner for that segment. Thanks to everyone who did their part and quietly kept it alive after 2013, by voting with their wallets!

Toyota is high off of the mass appeal and success of the Tacoma and 4Runner TRDs, with hefty profit margins. They're desperate to make the Tundra join that $$$ bandwagon, irrespective of beating their competition in sales numbers. As you said, hopefully it isn't an out-of-date choice, but unfortunately these decisions were made 4 years ago.

Interesting comment...considering the criticisms one reads about the new truck. It is more athletic looking now. Like a sumo wrestler who went on a serious diet and instead now does MMA.

Fraud?o_O Okay then... Best for a reason, but Toyota does good work as well.

It would be nice, but seeing as how the 4.6L V8 and 4.7L never made the jump over...:pout:

Not sure if anyone addressed this, but this is what I have seen so far, somewhat informally.

    Tundra_Interior_002.jpg

Even per my own product planning research, this is what we are seeing with most consumers nowadays and I am sure the same thing at Toyota as well. Plus, it is more cost friendly to standardize certain content, since low spec stuff tends to sit on lots longer and costs more to manufacture, for lower volumes and profit margins.

Oh they're out there, since the first teaser. Bros don't waste time at all.:headbang:

    33C6E6DE-F55F-4716-9750-133BA29D298C.jpg

Well, it's a good thing we're getting a greater variety of colors out there. Life would be boring with just grey, beige, and black.

This has been known a very long time, since the first test mules were caught in January 2019. It's aligning all BOFs on TNGA-F and 6 lugs just happened to be favored.

If it's any news to you, GX 550 might be that vehicle which echoes this at the same product positioning (midsize), but don't expect a twin turbo V6 anything.

Oh, you'll get one alright, just not what you expect...:pout:

Yes, unfortunately. I even hate it when non-Raptor F-150 owners and etc tack them on, yet are so quick to diss Raptors. How ironic, but if for TRD Pro and OEM, I can excuse it. That is if this thing is even 80 inches wide (I haven't checked).

This has been stated for a long time, so I am a bit puzzled how a lot of people are caught off guard. Between YouTube (I know, hard to trust LOL), news media, and myself, a lot of us have tried to warn existing Toyota owners, about the dropping of the 5.7L 3UR-FSE V8.

From my knowledge, the 2024 GX 550 will offer something like this FI V6 hybrid, but in the 2024 Tacoma an I4 hybrid is coming instead. That is September 2023, but we'll probably see it before that on stage and maybe a year before that, in camouflage testing.

Even though this was answered already, I think a few of us hinted, it would be limited to upper trims, just like Ford Power Boost. However, unlike Ford, Toyota will offer it as standard on TRD Pro and Power Boost hybrid is not offered on Raptor at all for the time being.

I had heard well over a year ago, that the TTV6 hybrid would be limited to upper trims and lower trims only available with regular TTV6. It's why I had been so confident, that their wouldn't be a V8 offered, even if many doubted it. The proof was in the pudding, from the moment I heard about iForce Max itself in late 2019.

I will say some of my early sources adjacent to Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. are now pissed and had expected more out of it. That person in particular has seen the next generation LX 600 and GX 550, which they are ecstatic about and freezing me out on (won't share pics).

I am still really surprised how they manage to keep to this launch date, considering it was set almost 3 years ago. I know that they had hoped to launch the hybrid at the same time as regular models, which is why it become a 2022 model ultimately and not a 2021 like they planned before.

    Tundra Job1.jpg

Clearly not the intended result, great thinking TOYOTA.

Unfortunately, very true. And that often seems like threat too.

Exactly, there are always extreme complaints. Although I try to be objective, this being very extremely in your face not subtle, this was intended. Typical Akio Toyoda (top down edicts), looking to get a reaction out of people and not being "safe".

Cooling requirements and a litany of various other things.

Oohps, clearly not the intended result...

It's honestly really tricky when you see stuff like this, which are considered two different generations.

    2008-ford-f-150-4x4-king-ranch-4dr-supercrew-styleside-5-5-ft-sb-059-large.jpg Used-2010-FORD-F150-SUPERCREW-King-Ranch.jpg

And rinse and repeat two generations later:

    ford_f-150_limited_supercrew_72_00dc01d8131d0d0c.jpg ford_f-150_limited_supercrew_431.jpg2019-ford-f-150-limited-1.jpg 2021-ford-f-150.jpg

In between that, Toyota tries to do nearly the same thing, out of cost savings and can't get away with it as easily.

    toyota_tundra_crewmax_platinum_package_8.jpg toyota_tundra_limited_crewmax_trd_off-road_8.jpg toyota_tundra_crewmax_limited_72.jpg toyota_tundra_1794_edition_15.jpg

Never, never, never. Poor man's G-Wagen in the 2024 Lexus GX 550 will have a TTV6 variant, but as for the Toyota brand? Well you never really got the 4.6L UR V8, so I wouldn't count on it.
